With a drier and hotter start to summer this year, more snakes are following their prey into areas that are irrigated and provide good cover and food. Unfortunately, this describes many people’s yards, and for a lot of people, the sight of a snake strikes fear. To further the problem, many companies take advantage of people’s fear of snakes by selling products or services that are ineffective, and in some cases, may increase the danger to people and pets.

Most people’s fear of snakes stems from the worry that they are venomous. Most won’t want to be close enough to tell, but venomous snakes have a pupil that resembles a cat’s. It has an oblong shape with peaked ends that look like a slit in the center of the eye. Non-venomous snakes usually have round pupils. The snakes most people are likely to see in their yards will be non-venomous, such as the garter or gopher snake.

If you encounter a snake in or around your home, keep calm and follow these tips.

Mow grass often and keep it fairly short. Snakes are less likely to reside and move through short grass because it increases their exposure to predators such as owls and hawks. Shorter grass also makes snakes easier to spot.

Avoid over watering your lawn. Too much landscape water may attract prey species such as worms, slugs and frogs, which in turn may attract snakes seeking a meal.

Keep trees and shrubs trimmed and away from your home and garage, and keep branches off the ground. Creating a 24-to-36-inch space under trees and shrubs will help keep snakes away and will make it easier to spot them if they do slither in.

If you feed birds, keep the feeder away from the house or consider not feeding them. Birds are messy eaters and often leave seed scattered below the feeder. Seed on the ground attracts rodents, which may also attract snakes seeking a meal. Store bird seed in a metal can with a tight-fitting lid.

Feed pets inside. Feeding them outside can attract insects and rodents which, again, attract snakes. If feeding outside is necessary, be sure to clean up uneaten food promptly. Store pet food in a metal can with a tight-fitting lid.

Store firewood, excess lumber and other types of debris away from your home. These provide prefect places for snakes to hide.

Think before you landscape. Avoid using mulch and large rocks in your landscape, as they attract snakes and their prey and can create breeding and overwintering habitat. Instead, use smaller, tight-fitting rock such as gravel or river rock. Also avoid landscaping with water gardens and Koi ponds.

Seal cracks and crevices on sidewalks and foundations, and consider getting an energy audit. These can be a great way to identify places that allow air conditioning and heat to escape the home. These same cracks and crevices may be used as an entry point by snakes and other small creatures.

When all else fails, consider fencing. Use 1/4 inch or smaller rigid mesh or solid sheeting and bury it a few inches into the ground. Include a bend at the top to prevent snakes from climbing up and over.

Do not use snake repellents or sulfur, as they are ineffective. Do not use mothballs because the active ingredient is naphthalene or paradichlorobenzene – chemicals that are toxic to insects and mammals, but are not effective against snakes. Using mothballs outside your home also violates product labels and puts your family and pets at risk. Do not use sticky traps outside. Traps placed outside capture all sorts of non-target animals and result in a slow, agonizing death.

If you have issues with snakes in your chicken coop, avoid using ceramic eggs or golf balls. Snakes that eat these artificial eggs die a slow and painful death over many weeks, and new snakes will show up to take their place. Instead, focus on improving your coop to prevent snakes from entering and follow the deterrents recommended above. If using ceramic or other artificial eggs to encourage a brooding hen to lay, glue them down to prevent snakes from eating them.

Do not bring out the guns, shovels or other weapons. Discharging a firearm toward the ground can result in bullet ricochet. If needing to get a snake to move on, use a water hose to spray the snake, which will encourage it to find a new place to take up residence.

Three ways to transfer a firearm

  1. Telephone
    • Non-restricted
      You do not need to register non-restricted firearms. That means you can transfer a non-restricted firearm without contacting the Canadian Firearms Program (CFP). However, the transferor (seller, giver) must make sure that the transferee (buyer, recipient) has a valid PAL. Call the CFP at 1-800-731-4000 to confirm the validity of the transferee’s licence before you transfer the firearm.
    • Restricted and Prohibited
      The CFP must speak with both the transferor and the transferee for restricted and prohibited firearms. However, both parties do not need to be available at the same time. Follow the steps below.
      1. Make sure the firearm is verified.
      2. Call the CFP with the following information:
        • If you are an individual transferor you will need to provide your full name, address and firearms licence number, and the transferee’s full name and PAL number
        • If you are a business transferor you will need to provide your business licence and identification number, and the transferee’s full name, address and PAL number
        • If you are an individual transferee you will need to provide your PAL number, full name and address, and the transferor’s full name and firearms licence number
        • If you are a business transferee you will need to provide your business licence and identification number, and the transferor’s full name, address and firearms licence number
        • If you initiate the transfer you will need to provide the registration certificate number and confirm the firearm information (make, model, serial number, firearms identification number (FIN), etc.)
      3. When you call the CFP, you will get a reference number. Make sure both the transferor and the transferee have that reference number.
      4. The CFO for the jurisdiction receives the request and will review the transfer to make sure that the transferee is acquiring the restricted firearm or prohibited handgun for one of the permitted purposes (Firearms Act, Section 28).
      5. The transferor will need to get an Authorization to Transport (ATT) to transport the restricted firearm to its new location. There is no fee for an ATT. Call the CFP at 1-800-731-4000 or submit form RCMP 5490.
      6. Both the transferor and the transferee will receive a confirmation notice to let them know the transfer is complete. After a transfer is approved the new registration certificate will be mailed to the new owner within a few weeks.

      The business initiates the transfer, identifies either the transferee or transferor, and obtains the required information in order to complete the transfer.

      A business can use this service to transfer restricted or prohibited firearms if:

      • a business buys from, or sells to, an adult who is 18 or older who has a valid PAL for that class of firearm
      • a business buys from, or sells to, another business or museum
      • a business sells to a public service agency

      Use form RCMP 5492 for restricted and prohibited firearms. Both the transferor and the transferee must complete the form. Call the CFP at 1-800-731-4000 to get a form.

      If you have the following types of firearms, you have them illegally:

      • restricted or prohibited firearms that have not yet been registered
      • any restricted or prohibited firearms that were registered under the former law, but not re-registered under the Firearms Act

      To reduce the risk of penalties, please register these firearms immediately or dispose of them lawfully.

      Do not take firearms into your local police detachment for disposal. Contact your local police department or detachment to arrange for pick up or delivery of any firearms.

      How to buy a gun in canada

      Canadians tend to believe that their government tightly legislates the buying and selling of firearms. Everyone needs a Possession and Acquisition Licence (PAL) to purchase a gun — whether it’s classified as restricted or non-restricted — and a would-be gun buyer needs that licence at the point of sale, both in-person and online.

      That’s all true, in theory. The system works fairly well when you are dealing with guns bought and sold at licensed businesses. It breaks down, however, when it comes to private deals.

      When a private owner buys, sells or trades a non-restricted firearm to another private citizen, there is no legal requirement for a seller to verify a buyer’s gun licence. Things get especially murky when it comes to online sales: guns can be transferred between buyers and sellers on opposite sides of the country, and a seller simply has the option to verify a buyer’s licence if he or she suspects wrongdoing.

      This is the case even when it comes to non-restricted firearms that are considered by some to be functionally equivalent to the AR-15 — the semi-automatic rifle used in several mass shootings stateside that is classified as restricted in Canada. Some examples include the Swiss Arms 556, the H&K SL8 and the Robinson XCR.

      While authorities have not specified the type of gun used by Matthew Vincent Raymond to allegedly kill two civilians and two officers in Fredericton on Aug. 10, they have confirmed that it was classified as non-restricted.

      Buying non-restricted guns online

      Private sellers take great pains to verify every buyer for fear of legal repercussions, according to one lifelong gun enthusiast.

      “The gun community in Canada is extremely self-policing,” Andre Perreault of Lethbridge, Alta. told HuffPost Canada by phone. “We’re extra careful about following the rules because when a PAL holder commits a crime, politicians use that to implement even tighter restrictions on law-abiding gun owners. So, by and large, we’re a self-regulating community.”

      Perreault is the founder and owner of GunPost.ca, an online forum for private citizens to buy, sell and trade firearms. He started the website four years ago as a way to conveniently sell guns from the comfort of his home.

      How to buy a gun in canada

      While popular online marketplaces like Facebook, Craigslist and Kijiji have banned the advertisement and sale of firearms, privately owned websites can still facilitate transactions between individuals.

      Restricted firearms, like non-prohibited handguns and some semi-automatic rifles, are registered to each individual owner. Ownership transfers can take days, sometimes weeks, to approve. But the majority of firearms available to buy on GunPost.ca are non-restricted, according to Perreault.

      Here’s what the RCMP website says about those types of guns: “Transfers of non-restricted firearms can be conducted without contacting the CFP [Canadian Firearms Program], as registration is no longer required for this class of firearm. The transferor may verify that the transferee has a valid PAL by calling the CFP toll-free number (1-800-731-4000) before making a sale.”

      “May” is the operative word: a seller may call the RCMP to verify that a PAL card is authentic, not flagged for any suspicious activity or reported as stolen. That means that while you must have a licence, you are not required to show it.

      Too much ‘wiggle room’: gun control advocates

      Some advocates for tighter gun legislation argue that the arrangement allows sellers too much “wiggle room.”

      “I think that the optional verification is a legal loophole in Canada’s gun control system,” Jooyoung Lee, a professor of sociology of the University of Toronto who writes about guns and trauma, told HuffPost Canada.

      “This program puts the onus of responsibility on gun sellers — who, by and large, care deeply about gun safety and ensuring that the potential buyer of a firearm is and will be a lawful possessor of a PAL. But the fact that this is not compulsory leaves . space for a seller to not follow through on the buyer’s qualifications.”

      Perreault’s safety tips help GunPost.ca members protect themselves when buying and selling guns online. Advice includes reading a user’s reviews, assessing a user’s knowledge of Canadian firearm policies (improperly classifying various guns “should raise warning signs”) and sending a friend to inspect the gun if you don’t live in the seller’s area.

      “If they refuse that offer, they are 99% likely to be a scammer,” the site reads.

      He also advises that buyers only send key information — “name as appears on the card, PAL number and expiry date” — to sellers for verification instead of screenshots of the card, which can leave buyers vulnerable to fraud.

      System not designed to flag suspicious activity

      Perreault’s tips primarily ensure that fraudulent sellers don’t scam buyers out of their money. “The likelihood of PALS being stolen for the purpose of buying firearms is not a thing,” he said.

      But in 2015, Calgary police warned people trying to purchase a firearm online to be aware of fraud sellers trying to obtain PAL numbers.

      In those cases, the buyers’ e-transfers were successfully halted before reaching the fraudulent sellers, but the scammers had already obtained PAL numbers. At that point, the police encouraged buyers who suspected their licence number had been compromised to report it.

      But PALs don’t work like credit cards: the system isn’t designed to flag suspicious activity. There are no caps on the number of firearms you can buy and no mandatory tracking of where or when a non-restricted gun was purchased. A holder must first notice their licence number has been compromised and then take it upon himself to report it.

      “The government doesn’t restrict how you share your PAL,” Perreault said. “The way to know yours had been compromised would be that you sent a PAL to a seller and you never got a gun.”

      How to buy a gun in canada

      Hundreds of hunters are failing to declare their firearms when they enter Canada. They are getting arrested and fined, and the U.S. Department of State wants to help.

      Geoff Martineau works at the Department of State, Bureau of Consular Affairs, Office of American Citizen Services. “We help U.S. citizens traveling abroad avoid problems,” he said. “In Canada, we’re looking at an estimated 200 to 300 U.S. citizens each year who run into trouble for failing to declare their firearms. Vancouver is the single largest port of entry where this occurs, and it’s a good possibility many of these travelers are headed to Alaska.”

      Martineau mentioned that it’s common to see U.S. citizens, en route to Alaska for some hunting, stopped at the border as they try to transit with firearms that are presumably rifles and shotguns.

      It’s difficult to get a handle on exact figures as most of the detentions aren’t reported, he said, but it seems most pay a large fine and are turned around at the border. He’s heard some go through lengthy court proceedings, have their cars impounded and their firearms confiscated.

      When crossing the border into Canada, hunters must declare all firearms in their possession. Declared rifles and shotguns may be carried through Canada while in transit to Alaska. Certain types of handguns are not permitted in Canada under any circumstances. Other handguns may be carried into Canada under certain circumstances.

      Declaring firearms involves filling out some paperwork, specifically Form 5589, the Non-Resident Firearm Declaration form. There is a $25 fee, payable in Canadian funds or with a credit card. The form is available at the border, or can be downloaded in advance from the Canadian Firearms Centre website (more details on that are offered at the end of the article). The form must be presented in triplicate and signed in front of a CBSA officer at the border (it is not possible to make photocopies at the border, so it will save time and effort to do some of the work in advance. Just be sure to wait until the border to sign in front of a customs officer).

      According to the Canadian Firearms Centre, completing the paperwork also allows you to bring in ammunition for that firearm for personal use.

      Martineau said that regarding ammunition, there have been many cases worldwide where American travelers arrive at a foreign destination with a single bullet somewhere in their luggage that they didn’t realize was there, and they get into trouble. He advised: Don’t use the same luggage for hunting as you do for other international travel.

      Canadian law requires that officials confiscate any firearms, ammunition, and other weapons from persons crossing the border who deny having the items in their possession. Confiscated firearms, ammunition, and weapons are not returned. Possession of an undeclared firearm may result in arrest and imprisonment. Travelers are strongly advised to inspect all belongings thoroughly prior to travel to Canada to avoid the accidental import of firearms or ammunition.

      Canada has three classes of firearms: non-restricted, restricted, and prohibited.

      How to buy a gun in canada

      Non-restricted firearms include most ordinary hunting rifles and shotguns. These may be brought temporarily into Canada for sporting or hunting use during hunting season, use in competitions, in-transit movement through Canada, or personal protection against wildlife in remote areas of Canada. Anyone wishing to bring hunting rifles into Canada must be at least 18 years old; properly store the firearm for transport; and follow the declaration requirements.

      Restricted firearms are primarily handguns. While they are not firearms, pepper spray, mace, and some knives also are included in this category. A restricted firearm may be brought into Canada, but an Authorization to Transport permit must be obtained in advance from a Provincial or Territorial Chief Firearms Officer. The permit allows a handgun to be in transit, for example to Alaska, but a permit would not be issued to someone simply vacationing in Canada.

      Prohibited firearms include fully automatic, converted automatics and certain military style weapons, including weapons designed for civilian use. A full list of prohibited weapons is available on the Canadian Firearms Centre website. Prohibited firearms are not allowed into Canada. Handguns with a barrel length of less than 105 mm, about 4 1/8 inches, are completely prohibited, and .25 and .32 caliber handguns are prohibited.

      The best source for more information on carrying firearms into or through Canada the Royal Canadian Mounted Police website, or a call to the Canada Firearms Center at 1-800-731-4000; request Extension #9026 if you will be entering Canada at the Alberta border and Extension #9530 if entering from British Columbia.

      U.S. citizens may find it helpful to register firearms with U.S. Customs before traveling through Canada in order to prove ownership.

“Love handles” is a common name that refers to the body fat that lies on top of the hips. Despite their simple nature — it’s just subcutaneous fat above the hips — love handles seem to have garnered a collective hatred. Many people dislike love handles and aim to get rid of them to increase muscle definition on their belly and sides.

People want them gone, whether their motivator is intrinsic or extrinsic. Most people approach this goal the wrong way, however, because they believe they can directly target the body fat on their sides. Weight loss unfortunately doesn’t work that way , but you can still lose love handles with these tips and exercises.

What love handles really are

Let’s start with a little bit of anatomy. What you call love handles is the body fat on top of your obliques, the core muscles that run from your ribs to your hips. Many people struggle to lose the body fat that lies atop their obliques and get frustrated when it bulges over their waistband.

The easiest solution is to go up a pants size, to be honest. But if you want to get rid of love handles for health reasons, such as reducing your risk of heart disease , or simply to feel more confident in your body, you definitely can — just not with side crunches, like many people believe.

As a reminder, spot reduction doesn’t work

Look, no matter how many side crunches you do , you won’t get rid of love handles without a consistent calorie deficit. Losing body fat is a numbers game — a simple game of calories in, calories out . Any health professional will argue that the source and quality of your calories does matter, but in the end, a calorie deficit is a calorie deficit. And a surplus is a surplus.

If you’re in a calorie surplus or even at maintenance, you won’t lose fat on your sides or anywhere else. A surplus will make you gain more over time, and maintenance calories will keep you exactly where you’re at.

To lose body fat, try sticking to a well-rounded workout plan that includes strength-training exercises as well as cardiovascular exercise . While strict diets aren’t necessary for weight loss, losing weight does require some level of attention to your eating pattern. Knowing roughly how many calories you eat and burn each day is essential to changing your body composition .

Best exercises for the obliques

All of the above said, you can strengthen your obliques to create a more chiseled look. Core strengthening exercises lead to muscle growth in your midsection, and a calorie deficit will help you lose subcutaneous body fat (the fat beneath your skin), revealing the hard-earned muscles underneath.

You’ll notice many of these exercises are compound movements rather than core isolation exercises. This is because compound movements (exercises that engage more than one joint or muscle group) engage more muscle fibers and burn more calories than single-joint or isolation exercises.

Side planks

If you thought regular planks were tough, wait until you try a side plank. This isometric core exercise challenges your entire midsection with a focus on your obliques. Your arms, shoulders and upper back also work to stabilize your body.

Try this: Do three sets of a 10-second side plank on each side. Each week, increase the time by five seconds until you can get to a minute on each side.

Farmer’s carry

Deceptively simple, the farmer’s carry ignites a burn in your arms, back and core. It’s great practice for bringing all the groceries inside in one trip.

Try this: Use two kettlebells or dumbbells that are challenging, but not impossible, for you to hold for 30 seconds. Carry the weights for 30 seconds and then rest 30 seconds. Repeat two more times. For an extra oblique challenge, try a single-arm farmer’s carry and focus on keeping your torso aligned.

Dead hang

The dead hang activates your latissimus dorsi (“lats,” aka the muscles you use during pull-ups ), which is not an oblique muscle, but is a part of your core and affects the way your midsection looks and functions.

Try this: Hang from a bar for three sets of 10 seconds. Over time, work your way up to 30-second sets. To engage your abs more, tuck your knees up to your chest or as high as you can.

Mountain climbers

A classic core move , mountain climbers activate your obliques along with all of your other core muscles. The key is to perform your reps slowly, rather than in a high-intensity interval training fashion. Slow reps are more conducive to strength while fast reps are more conducive to cardio.

Try this: Perform three to five sets of 10 to 20 mountain climbers. Practice bringing your knee all the way to your elbow. Rest as needed in between sets.

Seated sit-ups with a press

Up for a serious core challenge? You need to add sit-ups with a press to your routine. Any type of sit-up engages the core, but loading one arm with weight and pressing it above your head during the sit-up presents a unique challenge. This movement forces your obliques to work extra hard at keeping your torso aligned, lest your lower back suffer.

Try this: Using a kettlebell or dumbbell that’s challenging but not too heavy, perform three sets of 10 reps, switching the weight to the other arm after five reps.

Single-arm overhead press

In the same fashion as the single-arm squats above, single-arm overhead presses force your obliques to activate more than usual due to the offset weight.

Try this: Do three sets of 10 reps, switching arms after five reps. Take care to choose a weight that’s challenging, but that you’re able to press up without arching your back.

For some guys, there’s no greater goal than achieving an aesthetic ideal and building a body that wouldn’t be out of place on the pedestal of a Grecian statue (or at least on the cover of a cheap romance novel). There are plenty of challenges to accomplishing this goal, and love handles are one of the peskiest hurdles on the path to achieving that type of physique. The stubborn region of fat just above the belt can be obstinate, and it takes more than just a few crunches and leg lifts to get rid of it.

Love handles are composed of subcutaneous fat, which sits just beneath the skin. In one sense, that’s good news. That type of fat isn’t an immediate problem, outside of your cosmetic concerns and general health. You don’t have as much to be worried about subcutaneous fat as the insidious visceral fat in your belly, which can cause all kinds of health issues. But if you’re determined to lose those nagging love handles, you do have options.

There are a few shortcuts you can take to get rid of love handles, but they’re extreme, and not something that we’d generally recommend. Liposuction is one of these options. More recently, men have turned to non-invasive treatments, the most popular of which feature either freezing or heating the stubborn fatty areas off the body. These treatments are expensive and might be a bridge too far unless you’re really desperate.

Besides, by cutting corners, you’ll miss out on the fitness gains you’d make along the way using other methods, which will hopefully become a reason your training in and of itself. If getting rid of love handles without special treatments is your goal, you’ll have to work hard—but you’ll have to work smart, too.

One method that is not smart and won’t work is spot reduction. The theory is that if you focus all of your attention on one specific area in your training (for instance, doing hundreds of crunches for you midsection), you’ll be able to burn off the fat in just that area. But that’s not how your body works. What you can do is lose fat more generally, then build up muscle where you might not have had it before—but for that to work, you’ll have to do that smart, hard work.

Here’s a plan to ditch your stubborn love handles from former Men’s Health fitness advisor Craig Ballantyne, C.S.C.S.

Find the Right Intervals for Exercise

Studies have shown that interval-based exercise programs, most specifically high intensity interval training (HIIT), are more effective for burning off your love handles than steady state cardio. Instead of running for miles on end without any clear goal, fine tune your work and rest periods to strip away the fat.

So what type of interval program should you use? You can use a jump rope, or apply the principles to running or weight room work. Ballantyne recommends this setup to banish that pesky midsection fat:

After a thorough warmup, alternate between 20 seconds of hard exercise and 40 seconds recovery. Repeat that pattern 6 to 8 times. Afterwards, finish with 5 to 10 minutes of cooldown exercise.

If you have extra time, do 10 minutes of regular cardio pace.

Don’t Overload on Cardio

Even though Ballantyne recommended cardio for a cool down, he’s wary of its effectiveness when performed alone. Extended periods of steady state cardio, like jogging, won’t do much to cut down your spare tire. “It’s not going to work as well as interval training,” Ballantyne said.

This is related to another issue, according to Ballantyne: Many guys don’t have enough muscle in the first place. Losing love handles, like bodybuilding, is a game of illusion. Muscle on your chest and back can essentially “hide” excess fat in your love handle area.

“So most guys are “skinny-fat,” and then try to lose love handles with cardio only, and basically become even smaller versions of themselves—but still skinny-fat,” Ballantyne said. “It’s better to use intervals and weight training to gain muscle and lose fat at the same time—which IS possible—and change your body’s overall appearance.”

Rethink Your Core Training Routine

“Ab exercises like crunches are generally a waste of time,” Ballantyne said. The problem is, you’re only working the muscles around your lower spine with crunches and situps.

Build Yourself Up While Slimming Down

While you’re cutting down your midsection, do yourself a solid and work on some other areas of your body that can take attention away from your ample hips. Build up your pecs, lats, deltoids, and traps to create the illusion of smaller love handles.

“Most guys don’t have enough muscle to focus on just losing weight,” Ballantyne said, “so every guy must build some muscle in these areas.”

How can you build the muscle and lose fat at the same time? You’re hoping to “culk,” so you should start by training hard, eating properly, and sticking to a consistent program.

Ballantyne also recommended a plan based around two to three total body workouts per week. Use five exercises per workout (one lower body, one upper push, one lower body single leg, one upper pulling, one total body ab exercise). Do that as a circuit three times through, with eight to 12 reps per exercise. Finish with interval training.

If you want advanced results, you have to do advanced things,” said Ballantyne. “Such as cutting all the processed carbohydrates from your diet. One cheat reward meal per week—that’s cheat MEAL, not cheat DAY.”

Replace breakfast cereals and grain carbs with fruits, vegetables, and nuts. “Losing your love handles isn’t going to happen if you insist on treating yourself to a Frappuccino, Pepsi, and a slice of pizza every day,” he said. “It means eating meals of lean protein, fiber-rich vegetables, and snacking on apples and nuts between meals.”

“It’s diet. It’s just too easy for most guys to cheat, Ballantyne said. “They have to realize that they have to have more discipline if they want results.”

What Is the Best Exercise to Get Rid of Love Handles?

Unfortunately, exercise alone will not get rid of love handles. Studies have shown that abdominal resistance training does not reduce belly fat or slim the waistline more than diet alone.

Diet plus exercise works best to reduce love handles. It is possible to tighten the core muscles in the lower abdomen, and when combined with diet, the mid-section can appear more toned.

To lose your love handles, you need to lose fat all over the body. The best exercise regimen for fat loss includes both aerobic and strength exercises (resistance training). High-intensity interval training (HIIT), also called high-intensity intermittent exercise (HIIE), is a type of cardiovascular exercise that alternates between short bouts of high-intensity and low-intensity exercise. HIIT usually alternates between slower to moderate-intensity and high-intensity movements. The Obesity Reviews Journal reviewed 13 different studies on overweight adults and found that HIIT reduced weight and waist circumference.

Specific exercises that can help tone and tighten the mid-section include:

  • Abdominal scissors
    • Lay on your back with hands at your sides or under your glutes for back support
    • Extend legs straight, then cross the legs over each other, alternating the leg that crosses on top; or alternate legs going straight up and down
    • Don’t let the legs drop to the floor
    • Make sure your core is engaged and your lower back is pressed onto the floor
    • Lay down on your belly and prop yourself forearms and toes, head facing the floor
    • Engage the abdominal muscles and keep the body in a straight line
    • Hold position for a few seconds and return to the floor
    • Start in a plank position
    • Bring the right knee up and across the body, past the stomach to the left elbow, keeping the back and arms straight and core engaged
    • Return to a plank position and repeat on the other side
    • Lie down on the right side and prop the body up using the right elbow and hand, with the left foot stacked on top of the right foot
    • Raise your hips and buttocks towards the ceiling
    • Hold position for a few seconds and return to the floor
    • Repeat the on the other side
    • Begin in a seated position with knees bent, feet hip-width apart
    • Lean the upper body backwards to a 45-degree angle, keeping the back straight
    • Engage the core and twist the upper body to the left and place hands on the floor, then twist to the right and place the hands on the floor
    • Stand with feet shoulder-width apart and raise both arms above the head on the left-hand side
    • Bring hands down toward the floor on the right-hand side of the body as you perform a squat while twisting the mid-section and hips
    • Perform several times and repeat on the other side

When cleaning your gilt picture frames, you want to use a chemical that won’t damage the finish or soak into the frames’ backing. Like other frames, you need to clean your gilt picture frame’s glass as well to remove any fingerprints and debris from the surface.

Place the gilt picture frame on a flat surface—desk, table, workbench or other surface.

Use a small paint brush and gold paint to touch up any faded paint on your gilt picture frame.

You can also use a mixture of three egg whites and 28.4gr. of baking soda to clean your gilt picture frames. Apply the mixture using a sponge then wipe off the dirt and grime with a paper towel. Let the picture frames air dry then use a small paint brush and gold paint to touch up any faded paint.

I spend quite a lot of time putting gunk onto frames. People look at me gobsmacked when I tell them I actually buy dust.

Some grime is part of the frame’s character, so try to avoid overcleaning. I wouldn’t go further than a flick over with a stiff brush and a polish with a duster. Preferably one that has been used previously to wax polish something and is nicely saturated.

** Das Pronto modeling clay is great for repairs. On ‘flying’ bits I sometimes fix in a wire armature for support and build around it.

*** The safest way to clean a painting is to get an experienced restorer to do it. There are lots of pet methods used by people and some of them work well on some paintings. But no two paintings are exactly alike and things can go bad very spectacularly.

can you post a photo of the frame? and ideally also a closeup of the surface.

My belief is that cleaning paintings is best left too qualified restorers, sorry, but the possibilities for things going wrong are endless. You can’t compare cleaning frames and gilding with paintings but there are still various things to consider, and that can easily go wrong.

How are the frames going Mrs C? Your compo should be fine, it keeps well in the freezer, and it is easily the best material for replacing missing ornament.

A basic and easily available cleaner is Vulpex, which can be combined with water or white spirit. Working in very small areas at a time, brushing on and then lifting the vulpex and dirt with small cotton buds or swabs. But be aware that water doesn’t go together well with gesso or water gilding so you really need to be very careful when using any water based cleaning agent. You could also try ‘neutral soap’ (Swarfega), brush it on and then remove and neutralise with white spirit on cotton swabs. Goes without saying that you should test an inconspicous area first. I think another potential problem is that excessive white spirit will lift some oil gilding mordants, but this is just another example of problems that can be encountered. I believe that solutions of triammonium citrate (amongst others) are used by some museums/restorers but I have no experience of using these. If you want to be really old school, saliva has been used as a cleaning agent for ages (as mentioned by Dermot above).

When cleaning it is important to work carefully, slowly and in very small areas (1”) at a time. If you have not done much of this work before, be very cautious about working on a customers frame, and not use them to practice on. Things can easily go wrong, such as the removal of the gilding, weakening and delamination of the gesso.

This then leads on to another issue which is the stability of the gesso and compo ornament in the first place, the glues used to bind these will have weakened and dried out over time and need to be consolidated, often this will have to be done before any cleaning is carried out. You can use RSG (but be very careful of not making it too strong!), gelatin, PVA, fish glues or with experience you can’t beat the wonder adhesive paraloid B72.

Wood Frames
For smooth wood frames, a microfiber cloth and a little furniture polish will work. If the frame is porous or especially dirty, use a microfiber cloth and a solution of water and wood-cleaning product. Follow the directions on the bottle.

Plastic or Acrylic Frames
Plastic picture frames are hard, non-porous surfaces. A microfiber cloth and warm, soapy water will clean these kinds of frames quickly and effectively. The same method will also work on acrylic frames. Please note, never use paper towels to clean acrylic because this can permanently scratch the acrylic surface.

Silver Frames
It’s only a matter of time before your silver picture frames begin to tarnish. The safest cleaning option is to use silver polish and a soft cloth. If you don’t have any silver polish on hand, there’s an easy and effective home remedy you can try: Mix a few drops of dish soap with warm water and use a soft cloth to rub the soap solution all over the frame. Then wipe the frame clean with a clean, damp cloth, and buff it dry.

Brass Frames
Brass is a tough, corrosion-resistant metal. If your brass picture frames start looking dull, smudged or tarnished, acid is the answer. Mix equal parts salt, flour and white vinegar to create a paste. Spread the mixture all over the frame and let it sit for about an hour. Then just wipe the paste off with a damp cloth and buff it with a dry microfiber towel.

Gilded Frames
Gilded frames are fragile and valuable things of beauty. There are several different methods of gilding, and each one has its own cleaning requirements. Determining which kind of gilding is present requires painstaking analysis, and using the wrong products or tools on a gilded frame can cause extensive damage. That’s why we recommend having dirty gilded picture frames cleaned by a professional.

How to Clean Picture Frame Glass

If your picture frame has glazing that is real glass, it’s safe to clean the glass with your regular window cleaning product and a paper towel. However, if the glazing is made of acrylic or Plexiglass, do not use household window cleaning sprays or paper towels because these products will damage the surface. Instead, use a solution of warm water and dish soap with a clean, soft cloth. Rinse the glazing with fresh water and buff dry with a clean microfiber towel.

How to clean gilded picture frames

Gilt, or golden colored objects, can be beautiful and unique but also extremely fragile. They can last virtually forever or be damaged or destroyed in an instant. Totally impervious to light, chemicals, and time or wiped away with the briefest exposure to water. They are thoroughly understood by few and compromised by many.

Gilt objects are created by using various karats of gold leaf, metal leaf (primarily bronze), or various types of “gold” paint. They can be plated, water or oil gilded, and painted. Plating can be done using many methods from traditional ormoulu, using mercury and heat, to various electrically induced coatings. Water gilding uses water soluble animal based protein glues while oil gilding can be applied using everything from traditional primarily linseed oil based sizing to a variety of modern sizings that can consist of many different synthetic materials. “Gold” paint can be pigmented with easily tarnished bronze powder, non-tarnishing mica powders, or in extremely rare cases actual gold powder, that are mixed into virtually any type of clear coating.

I hope you are beginning to understand that gilt objects are not a homogenous or easily defined category. Not only are gilt objects made by using many different materials and methods, one object will often be gilt using a mix of more than one of these materials and methods interspersed and overlaid. On top of this, all of these different materials and methods are often damaged by completely different materials and type of exposures. Adding one more layer of complexity is that different gilt coatings will then be covered with a variety of protective clear coatings that can range from the now extremely rare traditional coating of water based animal protein glue sizing, to wax, to spirit varnishes such as shellac, to nitro-cellulose lacquers, to the extremely varied synthetic chemical based modern clear coatings.

Possible Damage Situations

  • Uncoated water gilded gold leaf will not tarnish and is impervious to most chemicals and ultra violet light exposure, but can be scratched by your fingernail and wiped away with one swipe of a water wet cloth.
  • A metal substrate oil gilded with gold leaf will be fairly stable under water exposure, but a gesso coated wood substrate oil gilded with gold leaf will not.
  • Uncoated bronze leaf and bronze pigmented paints can quickly begin to oxidize and tarnish and in the course of a fairly small amount of time go from a golden color to everything from dull brown to a fairly lurid green.
  • Water gilded gold leaf will often not be damaged by the most powerful and crude commercial paint stripper, while oil gilded gold leaf will be quickly damaged or completely destroyed.
  • About the only constant in gilt coatings is that due to their thinness they will be damaged by wear and friction.

Appearance

These different materials and methods can also be used to achieve very similar looking finishes.

  • A 23kt gold leaf matte coating on gesso can be made to appear very much the same whether it was oil gilded or water gilded.
  • Bronze powder pigments and mica powder pigments can appear the same, especially when new.
  • When you see the patina of grime and exposure time can add, oil gilded bronze leaf coating can be very hard to differentiate from gold leaf coating.

All of this variety, susceptibility, and fragility means that I, as a professional gilder and gilding conservator, spend a great deal of time trying to repair gilt objects that have been improperly and poorly cleaned, stored, packed and transported. These various types of damage are caused by a variety of types of people from the object’s owners and cleaning staff, to very expensive and high profile moving companies, restorers, “artists”, and even other conservators.

  • Eat close to your usual times to keep your blood sugar steady. If your meal is served later than normal, eat a small snack at your usual mealtime and eat a little less when dinner is served.
  • Invited to a party? Offer to bring a healthy dish along.
  • If you have a sweet treat, cut back on other carbs (like potatoes and bread) during the meal.
  • Don’t skip meals to save up for a feast. It will be harder to manage your blood sugar, and you’ll be really hungry and more likely to overeat.
  • If you slip up, get right back to healthy eating with your next meal.
  • Have pumpkin pie instead of pecan pie. Even with a dollop of whipped cream, you’ll cut calories and sugar by at least a third.
  • Break physical activity up into smaller chunks so it’s easier to schedule, like walking 10 minutes several times a day.
  • Schedule some “me” time every day—a nap, dog walk, or hot bath to get your energy back for the next celebration.

2. Outsmart the Buffet

When you face a spread of delicious holiday food, make healthy choices easier:

  • Have a small plate of the foods you like best and then move away from the buffet table.
  • Start with vegetables to take the edge off your appetite.
  • Eat slowly. It takes at least 20 minutes for your brain to realize you’re full.
  • Avoid or limit alcohol. If you do have an alcoholic drink, have it with food. Alcohol can lower blood sugar and interact with diabetes medicines.

Also plan to stay on top of your blood sugar. Check it more often during the holidays, and if you take medicine, ask your doctor if the amount needs to be adjusted.

3. Fit in Favorites

No food is on the naughty list. Choose the dishes you really love and can’t get any other time of year, like Aunt Edna’s pumpkin pie. Slow down and savor a small serving, and make sure to count it in your meal plan.

4. Keep Moving

You’ve got a lot on your plate this time of year, and physical activity can get crowded out. But being active is your secret holiday weapon; it can help make up for eating more than usual and reduce stress during this most stressful time of year. Get moving with friends and family, such as taking a walk after a holiday meal.

5. Get Your Zzz’s

Going out more and staying out later often means cutting back on sleep. Sleep loss can make it harder to manage your blood sugar, and when you’re sleep deprived you’ll tend to eat more and prefer high-fat, high-sugar food. Aim for 7 to 8 hours per night to guard against mindless eating.

Most of all, remember what the season is about—celebrating and connecting with the people you care about. When you focus more on the fun, it’s easier to focus less on the food.

How to eat healthily over the holidays

It’s easy to get swept up in the holiday season. This combination of religious and national celebrations can help keep the cold winter away. But the feasts and parties that mark it can tax the arteries and strain the waistline. By eating just 200 extra calories a day — a piece of pecan pie and a tumbler of eggnog here, a couple latkes and some butter cookies there — you could pack on two to three pounds over this five- to six-week period. That doesn’t sound like much, except few people shed that extra weight in the following months and years.

You don’t need to deprive yourself, eat only boring foods, or take your treats with a side order of guilt. Instead, by practicing a bit of defensive eating and cooking, you can come through the holidays without making “go on a diet” one of your New Year’s resolutions.

  1. Budget wisely. Don’t eat everything at feasts and parties. Be choosy and spend calories judiciously on the foods you love.
  2. Take 10 before taking seconds. It takes a few minutes for your stomach’s “I’m getting full” signal to get to your brain. After finishing your first helping, take a 10-minute break. Make conversation. Drink some water. Then recheck your appetite. You might realize you are full or want only a small portion of seconds.
  3. Distance helps the heart stay healthy. At a party, don’t stand next to the food table. That makes it harder to mindlessly reach for food as you talk. If you know you are prone to recreational eating, pop a mint or a stick of gum so you won’t keep reaching for the chips.
  4. Don’t go out with an empty tank. Before setting out for a party, eat something so you don’t arrive famished. Excellent pre-party snacks combine complex carbohydrates with protein and unsaturated fat, like apple slices with peanut butter or a slice of turkey and cheese on whole-wheat pita bread.
  5. Drink to your health. A glass of eggnog can set you back 500 calories; wine, beer, and mixed drinks range from 150 to 225 calories. If you drink alcohol, have a glass of water or juice-flavored seltzer in between drinks.
  6. Avoid alcohol on an empty stomach. Alcohol increases your appetite and diminishes your ability to control what you eat.
  7. Put on your dancing (or walking) shoes. Dancing is a great way to work off some holiday calories. If you are at a family gathering, suggest a walk before the feast or even between dinner and dessert.
  8. Make room for veggies. At meals and parties, don’t ignore fruits and vegetables. They make great snacks and even better side or main dishes — unless they’re slathered with creamy sauces or butter.
  9. Be buffet savvy. At a buffet, wander ’round the food table before putting anything on your plate. By checking out all of your options, you might be less inclined to pile on items one after another.
  10. Don’t shop hungry. Eat before you go shopping so the scent of Cinnabons or caramel corn doesn’t tempt you to gobble treats you don’t need.
  11. Cook from (and for) the heart. To show family and friends that you reallycare about them, be creative with recipes that use less butter, cream, lard, vegetable shortening, and other ingredients rich in saturated fats. Prepare turkey or fish instead of red meat.
  12. Pay attention to what really matters. Although food is an integral part of the holidays, put the focus on family and friends, laughter and cheer. If balance and moderation are your usual guides, it’s okay to indulge or overeat once in a while.

They say taxes and death are the only two constants in life, but it sure seems like the holidays circle around all too quickly each year. And with those sacred and merriment-filled days comes a familiar angst: the eating, drinking and family gathering seem endless, while sleep and normal stress-management routines take a back seat. 1. Find New Ways to Move

If your exercise routine feels laborious or tedious already, chances are you won't get excited about doing it when you're tired, overworked and overbooked. Instead of sticking to the same 30-minute jog or routine gym session, branch out and find new ways to move that sound fun to you.

Try a new workout class or online video. Recruit a friend or family member to join you. Organize a family activity like ice skating, a hike or even a scavenger hunt. Find an indoor climbing or swimming facility that has holiday-friendly hours. Or, if your head just isn't in it for a traditional workout, keep your body moving by cleaning out closets, digging out the holiday decorations or volunteering for physical prep tasks like hanging up holiday lights. Moving big boxes, bags and piles can help you work up a sweat, too.

2. Make Protein the Star

Holiday party spreads may offer a plethora of dips, chips and vegetable or fruit platters, but one way to actually fill up and feel satisfied when faced with all those endless little bites is to make protein one of your plate's primary features.

Higher-protein diets increase satiety (compared to lower-protein diets), meaning you're more satisfied and less likely to overeat. Opt for plant-, fish- or animal-based proteins, egg-based dishes, sliced meats or cheeses, bean salads or bean-based dips, yogurts and nut mixes. Then add the sides of fresh fruits and vegetables, grains or finger foods.

3. Go Meatless for One Meal a Day

Ample research shows that plant-based diets promote health. Go meatless for one meal a day to add some variety to your plates and enjoy foods that can help lower blood cholesterol levels, promote blood sugar control and reduce risk of cardiovascular disease.

This may mean having a black bean burger instead of a beef patty, topping salads with chickpeas instead of grilled chicken or steak, or having a vegetable stir-fry over brown rice with roasted tofu instead of shrimp for dinner. If your friend or family holiday parties tend to go heavy on the meat-based entrees, try balancing your day with a plant-based lunch or breakfast.

4. Stock Up on Sleep

While it's not effective to bank sleep hours during the week in preparation for late nights out on the weekend, it is helpful to make a habit out of prioritizing sleep as often as possible. Adequate sleep is associated with better stress-management abilities and a healthy balance of hunger and satiety hormones (ghrelin and leptin, respectively). Inadequate sleep, which is defined as less than the recommended seven to nine hours per night, may lead to changes in appetite and mood.

On the flip side, chronic high stress levels may impact quality of sleep. It can be a vicious cycle. Try to avoid this by getting seven to nine hours of sleep per night as often as possible. Develop a sleep routine to help reduce stress levels before bedtime and improve sleep quality. Yes, that might mean putting the phone down.

What’s this fuss about true randomness?

Perhaps you have wondered how predictable machines like computers can generate randomness. In reality, most random numbers used in computer programs are pseudo-random, which means they are generated in a predictable fashion using a mathematical formula. This is fine for many purposes, but it may not be random in the way you expect if you’re used to dice rolls and lottery drawings.

RANDOM.ORG offers true random numbers to anyone on the Internet. The randomness comes from atmospheric noise, which for many purposes is better than the pseudo-random number algorithms typically used in computer programs. People use RANDOM.ORG for holding drawings, lotteries and sweepstakes, to drive online games, for scientific applications and for art and music. The service has existed since 1998 and was built by Dr Mads Haahr of the School of Computer Science and Statistics at Trinity College, Dublin in Ireland. “You are Sooo Random!” – Randomness & Creativity Research

If you were a rabbit, fleeing from a fox, would you be more successful if following a predictable path, or a path that zigzags, unpredictably and randomly? If you are an average kind of rabbit, who does not want to be eaten and who wants to pass on his/her genes, it would serve you well to escape in a zigzag manner, completely randomly. The fox will then become confused and give up, while you make it home in time for a firefly-lit dinner of fresh carrots and cabbage. That’s the animal world. In the human world (granted also animal, but with a larger frontal lobes), randomness has been suggested to evolve into what is now known as human creativity. If something is random, it is by definition variable, different, unlike a stereotypical thought (response, product, etc).

But does creativity really benefit from randomness? Just think of children or individuals with psychopathology – their answers can be random and thus very different, but can these answers be called creative? In the research world, it is agreed that creativity requires novel AND appropriate responses. Thus it seems a combination of randomness and lack of it (focus?) might be necessary. We set out to explore such musings in our recent study. In the laboratory, participants were asked to generate numbers on a computer keyboard (Random Number Generation task). Then their creative potential was assessed, as well as their actual creative achievement history. It turned out that both random and non-random processes were involved. Specifically, being random was predictive of creative fluency, which is simply generating as many responses to a given task as possible. Randomness was also related to creative flexibility, or the ability to switch between categories. However, being LESS random was predictive of creative originality, or the number of responses that are unique, as well as of actual creative achievement.

These findings provide support for the idea that creativity does not only involve looser association, defocused or focused attention, lack of fixedness, etc. (suggested in literature), but most likely it is about being flexible, and knowing (either consciously and/or subconsciously) what is functional and when. We reached a similar conclusion in another study of ours, where we found that creative folks displayed more flexible cognitive control. Oshin Vartainian also reported that creative people were better at adjusting their focus of attention as a function of task demands. Based on the provided support, it is apparent then that it’s advantageous to be as random as possible for generation of ideas, but sticking with a particular response is predictive of creative originality.

So next time your friends say that you are “sooo random,” hold your head up high and keep at it. But don’t forget to spot those brilliant ideas among the dis-order, and focus. Such is the recipe for creativity.

People have been using random numbers for millennia, so the concept isn’t new. From the lottery in ancient Babylon, to roulette tables in Monte Carlo, to dice games in Vegas, the goal is to leave the end result up to random chance.

But gambling aside, randomness has many uses in science, statistics, cryptography and more. Yet using dice, coins, or similar media as a random device has its limitations.

Because of the mechanical nature of these techniques, generating large quantities of random numbers requires great deal of time and work. Thanks to human ingenuity, we have more powerful tools and methods at our disposal.

Let’s consider two principal methods used to generate random numbers. The first method is based on a physical process, and harvests the source of randomness from some physical phenomenon that is expected to be random.

Such a phenomenon takes place outside of the computer. It is measured and adjusted for possible biases due to the measurement process. Examples include radioactive decay, the photoelectric effect, cosmic background radiation, atmospheric noise (which we will use in this article), and more.

Thus, random numbers generated based on such randomness are said to be “true” random numbers.

Technically, the hardware part consists of a device that converts energy from one form to another (for example, radiation to an electrical signal), an amplifier, and an analog-to-digital converter to turn the output into a digital number.

As an alternative to “true” random numbers, the second method of generating random numbers involves computational algorithms that can produce apparently random results.

Why apparently random? Because the end results obtained are in fact completely determined by an initial value also known as the seed value or key. Therefore, if you knew the key value and how the algorithm works, you could reproduce these seemingly random results.

Random number generators of this type are frequently called Pseudorandom number generators and, as a result, output Pseudorandom Numbers.

Even though this type of generator typically doesn’t gather any data from sources of naturally occurring randomness, such gathering of keys can be made possible when needed.

Let’s compare some aspects of true random number generators or TRNGs and pseudorandom number generators or PRNGs.

PRNGs are faster than TRNGs. Because of their deterministic nature, they are useful when you need to replay a sequence of random events. This helps a great deal in code testing, for example.

On the other hand, TRNGs are not periodic and work better in security sensitive roles such as encryption.

A period is the number of iterations a PRNG goes through before it starts repeating itself. Thus, all other things being equal, a PRNG with a longer period would take more computer resources to predict and crack.

Example Algorithm for Pseudo-Random Number Generator

A computer executes code that is based on a set of rules to be followed. For PRNGs in general, those rules revolve around the following:

  1. Accept some initial input number, that is a seed or key.
  2. Apply that seed in a sequence of mathematical operations to generate the result. That result is the random number.
  3. Use that resulting random number as the seed for the next iteration.
  4. Repeat the process to emulate randomness.

Now let’s look at an example.

The Linear Congruential Generator

This generator produces a series of pseudorandom numbers. Given an initial seed X0 and integer parameters a as the multiplier, b as the increment, and m as the modulus, the generator is defined by the linear relation: Xn ≡ (aXn-1 + b)mod m. Or using more programming friendly syntax: Xn = (a * Xn-1 + b) % m.

Each of these members have to satisfy the following conditions:

  • m > 0 (the modulus is positive),
  • 0 < a < m (the multiplier is positive but less than the modulus),
  • 0b < m (the increment is non negative but less than the modulus), and
  • 0X0 < m (the seed is non negative but less than the modulus).

Let’s create a JavaScript function that takes the initial values as arguments and returns an array of random numbers of a given length:

The Linear Congruential Generator is one of the oldest and best-known PRNG algorithms.

As for random number generator algorithms that are executable by computers, they date back as early as the 1940s and 50s (the Middle-square method and Lehmer generator, for example) and continue to be written today (Xoroshiro128+, Squares RNG, and more).

A Sample Random Number Generator

When I decided to write this article about embedding a random number generator within a web page, I had a choice to make.

I could’ve used JavaScript’s Math.random() function as the base and generate output in pseudorandom numbers like I have in earlier articles (see Multiplication Chart – Code Your Own Times Table).

But this article itself is about generating random numbers. So I decided to learn how to gather “true” randomness based data and share my discovery with you.

So below is the “true” Random Number Generator. Set the parameters and hit Generate.

R ANDOMNESS IS A valuable commodity. Computer models of complex systems ranging from the weather to the stockmarket are voracious consumers of random numbers. Cryptography, too, relies heavily on random numbers for the generation of unbreakable keys. Better, cheaper ways of generating and handling such numbers are therefore always welcome. And doing just that is the goal of a project with the slightly tongue-in-cheek name of COINFLIPS, which allegedly stands for Co-designed Improved Neural Foundations Leveraging Inherent Physics Stochasticity.

COINFLIPS operates under the aegis of Brad Aimone, a theoretical neuroscientist at Sandia National Laboratories (originally one of America’s nuclear-weapons laboratories, but which has now branched out into other areas, too). Dr Aimone’s starting-point is the observation that, unlike the circuits of digital computers, which will, if fed a given input, respond with a precise and predictable output, the link between input to and output from a nerve cell is more haphazard—or, in the jargon, “stochastic”. He wants to imitate this stochastic behaviour in something less squishy than a nerve cell. By doing so, he thinks he might be able to tune the distribution of digits that a random-number generator spits out, without affecting their underlying randomness.

Random doodlings

That would be useful. Existing random-number generators produce uniform distributions. (A “3”, say, is exactly as likely to appear as a “7”.) But, as Dr Aimone’s colleague Darby Smith notes, the real world that computer modellers are trying to model does not work like this. For example, the temperature in London in December may vary between -7°C and 17°C, but is most likely to be in the range 3°C to 8°C. Similarly, vessels are more likely to be in trouble close to a busy shipping route than in a remote backwater. Distorting uniform distributions of random numbers to take account of these realities is tedious and unsatisfactory. As Dr Smith observes, it would be more efficient if the random numbers used corresponded to the natural distribution in the first place.

There is also an abundance problem. Finding random phenomena in nature that can be transformed into computer bits is not easy. Often the source is computing itself—for example, by gathering the last digits in the numbers of milliseconds between keystrokes made by zillions of users. Otherwise, specialist, expensive hardware needs to be used to do things such as measuring heat flux through a silicon chip.

To eke out these scarce supplies, such truly random numbers are often then employed to seed programs called pseudo-random-number generators. The algorithms behind those generate sequences of numbers that have the statistical properties of randomness. But this is not the same as the real thing. As John von Neumann, one of computing’s pioneers, observed: “Anyone who considers arithmetical methods of producing random digits is, of course, in a state of sin.” Moreover, if the purpose is cryptography, this method is particularly risky. The opposition might be able to work out the algorithm involved.

Another member of the project, Shashank Misra, says COINFLIPS’ researchers have identified two hardware-based approaches for the production of tuneable, abundant random numbers. One relies on the patterns magnetic films make when disturbed, the other on how electrons travel through the barrier of a quantum-tunnelling diode. Both of these things are truly random. And both can be tuned to provide the sort of random-number distributions COINFLIPS requires.

In a quantum-tunnelling diode, electrons randomly leap (or fail to leap) across a gap, and the distribution of success or failure can be changed (and therefore tuned) by altering the voltage. A magnetic film, meanwhile, is composed of many tiny magnets jostling with each other. Flip the polarity of one of these and others around it flip in response, creating a random pattern. In this case the plan is to build tuneability into the magnetic medium itself, by tinkering with its composition, and also applying strain to it.

Random-number-generating hardware based on either of these approaches could be built directly into chips. Alternatively, a random-number-generating unit might be added to existing devices to yield an endless supply of high-speed randomness in the way that graphics-processing units are added to machines that have to handle a lot of graphical material. Crucially, unlike the heat-flux method, which requires intermediate hardware involving thousands of transistors to translate the signal into digital bits, the results of the diode and film methods can be read off as bits directly, using only one or two transistors to do so.

The efficiency offered by COINFLIPS means some tasks which currently require a supercomputer might be carried out with desktop hardware, depending on how much of the load involves generating and manipulating random numbers. Dr Aimone says the current approach tends to be simply to build bigger computers where needed. But even then some large-scale tasks may be too costly in money and time lost to conduct. You can, for example, run a model of a hurricane’s path only so many times before the real thing makes landfall.

Despite its peregrinations elsewhere, though, Sandia is ultimately in the nuclear business, and one early application of whatever COINFLIPS comes up with is likely to involve interpreting the results of collisions in particle accelerators—something the team have been exploring in collaboration with Temple University, in Philadelphia. The idea is to build a device which incorporates COINFLIPS hardware into the sensor itself. This will allow results from collisions, which will be randomly distributed, but in particular ways, to be compared with artificial random distributions, to see if they match. To be able to do this in real time is useful, because it allows an immediate decision to be made about whether or not to store a particular result. Modern colliders generate so many collisions that such immediacy in decision-making is important.

That is one, rather specific, application. But in the longer run, says Dr Aimone, COINFLIPS should enable many types of calculation that are currently impossible because of the volume of random numbers needed—for example, artificial-intelligence systems that capture the uncertainty of the world. This might be done in the form of neural networks which, like the human brain, have randomness available at each synapse. And that, in turn, may lead to COINFLIPS, a project inspired by biology, returning the compliment by providing a better way of understanding of how brains themselves work. ■

When it comes to skin care goals, the word “glowing” seems to universally rank top of mind. So in the pursuit of a healthy, radiant complexion, we scoured the research, tapped experts, and looked to time-tested rituals to find the best-of-the-best advice: This list only includes things that work with a Capital-W.

Here, 24 proven—and natural—ways to maintain glowing skin:

1. Use a safe, mineral-based sunscreen daily.

A clean, mineral-based SPF should be applied daily, all year round. “Ultraviolet radiation is unequivocally carcinogenic,” explains board-certified dermatologist Heidi Waldorf, M.D. “If you don’t care about that, think vanity—UV rays are the primary cause of the texture and color changes of skin aging.” To protect your skin, Waldorf recommends using a mineral-based sunscreen (look for active ingredients like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) that is SPF 30 or higher and applying it as the final step in your skin care routine every morning. Because mineral sunscreen is a physical barrier, it should be applied as the last step before makeup: Any skin care actives you try to apply after won’t penetrate.

Additionally—smart sun care goes well beyond SPF. Always be mindful of how much time you spend in the sun (read: don’t sunbathe for sport) as well as wear hats and other protective clothing.

These general skin care tips from dermatologists can benefit just about everyone.

How to get healthy skinApply sunscreen every day before you go outdoors. Sunscreen is the closest thing we have to a fountain of youth. It really can slow down skin aging. It can also help prevent skin cancer. Look for a sunscreen that offers broad-spectrum protection, SPF 30 (or higher), and water resistance.

While it’s important to protect infants’ skin from the sun, the AAD recommends applying sunscreen ONLY to children who are 6 months and older.

Don’t smoke. Smoking speeds up how quickly your skin ages. If you smoke, your wounds will also take longer to heal. And research shows that smoking worsens some skin diseases, including psoriasis and hidradenitis suppurativa.

Check your skin for skin cancer. Skin self-exams can help you find skin cancer early when it’s highly treatable. If you notice a spot that differs from the others, or one that changes, itches, or bleeds, make an appointment to see a dermatologist.

How to get healthy skinUse a self-tanner if you like looking tanned. Anytime you tan indoors or outside, you prematurely age your skin. You also increase your risk of getting skin cancer. A self-tanner can give you the look you want without the risks. To keep your skin healthy, you want to protect it from the sun even when using a self-tanner.

Use skin care products that match your skin’s needs. What’s your skin type — oily, dry, normal, combination, or sensitive? Do you have a skin condition? Using products formulated for your skin’s needs will help your skin look and feel its best.

Resist the urge to scrub your skin clean. If you’ve been sweating heavily or have a serious acne flare, it may seem natural to scrub your skin. Don’t! Scrubbing irritates your skin, which can worsen any skin condition, including acne.

Wash your face when waking, before bed, and after sweating. Washing when you wake up removes the dirt and bacteria that settle on your face while sleeping. Before bed, you want to remove makeup and grime, such as smog, smoke, or dirt, which may have landed on your skin.

How to get healthy skinGently wash your face. Gentle cleansing helps skin look its best. To gently cleanse your face, wet it with lukewarm water. Then apply a mild cleanser, gently applying the cleanser in a circular motion with your fingertips. Finish by completely rinsing off the cleanser and gently patting your face dry with a clean towel.

Stress less. Finding healthy ways to manage stress can help your skin, too. Some skin diseases like psoriasis and atopic dermatitis (eczema) often appear for the first time when someone feels really stressed. Stress can also cause flare-ups of many skin conditions, including acne, eczema, psoriasis, and rosacea.

See a board-certified dermatologist if you dislike something about your skin. When it comes to our skin, dermatologists are the experts. You’ll be happy to know that the basics of skin care are pretty simple. And if you’re a health-conscious person, chances are you’re already checking most of the boxes below.

So even though beauty bloggers and influencers may make you feel like you need all the things (like fancy lasers and light devices) to get better skin, there are a few simple, science-backed principles that can help you more than owning a bunch of products.

1. Use sunscreen every single day

“Your skin is your largest organ and should be taken care of,” dermatologist Dr. Amie Sessa told CNET. Her top tip for taking care of your skin? Sunscreen is nonnegotiable.

If you spend most of your time indoors or don’t live in a sunny place, it’s easy to neglect sunscreen, especially in the winter. But you still need sunscreen since your skin is exposed through the car or while walking on your commute, and you can still get sun damage in overcast weather. “Apply a daily moisturizer with SPF 30-plus to your face, neck and your chest every single day — make it a habit so you don’t have to think about it every day,” Sessa said.

2. Keep your skin moisturized

Apply a moisturizer soon after washing your skin to help seal in moisture.

It’s important to keep your skin moisturized in order for it to feel and look healthy. And even if you have oily skin or acne, your skin still needs moisture.

“Most people should apply a moisturizer immediately after bathing to seal the moisture in. My favorite over-the-counter moisturizers are Cerave cream and Eucerin Advanced repair,” Sessa said.

Equally as important as moisturizing is making sure you are cleansing your skin and removing makeup, especially before bed.

3. Get enough sleep

Sleep is important for overall health and your skin health.

It’s no question that getting enough sleep is essential for good health. And it’s no different for your skin.

Still not sold? One study found that sleep deprivation clearly affects skin appearance and increases the look of wrinkles, puffiness and dark circles, among other not-so-appealing signs.

“General good health tips apply to the skin, too — your skin will show if you are getting poor sleep or not enough of it,” Sessa said. Aiming for 7 to 8 hours minimum of uninterrupted sleep will pay off for your complexion.

4. Eat healthy foods

Just like getting enough sleep is important for your health, so is getting proper nutrition. Eating a balanced diet is key: You don’t have to restrict any foods, but eating mostly refined carbohydrates, heavily processed and fried foods takes a toll on your overall health, including your skin. Try to incorporate as many nutritious foods as you can, like fruits, veggies and whole grains.

Many experts agree that what you eat has a strong effect on your skin health, and research has shown that diet is important when it comes to things like acne, aging and even skin cancer.

Further, one of the most talked about topics in health lately is gut health — and the gut microbiome affects your skin, too. Scientists are studying the gut-skin axis and how the bacteria in your gut directly affects skin health. One of the biggest determiners of your gut microbiome is what you eat.

5. Stay hydrated

Drinking plenty of water can help you feel better and get better skin.

Dehydration can cause a ton of unpleasant symptoms like fatigue and digestive issues, just to name a few issues. And since drinking more water can make you healthier , it’s also great for your skin. Like Sessa mentioned before, overall healthy habits pay off for your skin, too.

Although many people tout the benefits of drinking water for your skin, science isn’t clear on whether drinking water affects skin hydration levels (but it’s still good for your overall health, and therefore your skin). Besides using a good moisturizer, you can also add a humidifier to your routine, especially if the air in your home or office is really dry.
