How to stop chest pain

You could be having a heart attack. Call 999 immediately as you need immediate treatment in hospital.

Non-urgent advice: See a GP if:

  • you have chest pain that comes and goes
  • you have chest pain that goes away quickly but you’re still worried

It’s important to get medical advice to make sure it’s nothing serious.

Common causes of chest pain

Chest pain has many different causes. In most cases, chest pain is not caused by a heart problem.

Your symptoms might give you an idea of the cause. Don’t self-diagnose – see a GP if you’re worried.

Possible causes

Chest pain symptoms Possible cause
Starts after eating, bringing up food or bitter tasting fluids, feeling full and bloated heartburn or indigestion
Starts after chest injury or chest exercise, feels better when resting the muscle chest sprain or strain
Triggered by worries or a stressful situation, heartbeat gets faster, sweating, dizziness anxiety or panic attack
Gets worse when you breathe in and out, coughing up yellow or green mucus, high temperature chest infection or pneumonia
Tingling feeling on skin, skin rash appears that turns into blisters shingles

Chest pain and heart problems

The most common heart problems that cause chest pain include:

    – which usually causes a sudden, sharp, stabbing pain that gets worse when you breathe deeply or lie down or a heart attack – which have similar symptoms but a heart attack is life-threatening

You’re more likely to have heart problems if you’re older or know you’re at risk of coronary heart disease.

Call 911 or have someone take you to the closest emergency room right away if you have chest pain that lasts longer than five minutes and does not go away when you rest or take medication. Cardiac chest pain can be life-threatening.

Chest pain can be a sign of a heart attack. Other signs of a heart attack include:

  • Sweating.
  • Nausea or vomiting.
  • Shortness of breath.
  • Light-headedness or fainting.
  • A rapid or irregular heartbeat.
  • Pain in your back, jaw, neck, upper abdomen, arm or shoulder.

What is chest pain?

Chest pain is pain in any area of your chest. You may feel the pain in your back, lungs, ribs, muscles or center of your chest. Chest pain can be sharp or dull. You may feel tightness, achiness, or you may feel like your chest is being crushed or squeezed. Chest pain is often intermittent (lasting for seconds, minutes to hours), but it can also be chronic, which means it lasts six months or longer.

What is angina?

Angina is a type of chest pain that happens when your heart is not getting enough oxygen-rich blood. Angina is a symptom of a heart problem.

Angina can feel like pressure or squeezing in your chest. It can also cause discomfort in your shoulders, arms, neck, jaw and back. Angina sometimes feels like indigestion.

Possible Causes

What causes chest pain?

Although most people think of chest pain as a sign of a heart problem/heart attack, it can be caused by many things. Chest pain can be a symptom of:

  • Heart and vascular problems, such as a heart attack, coronary artery disease (blockages in the blood vessels that carry blood to your heart), pericarditis (inflammation of the lining around your heart), aortic dissection (a tear in the wall of your aorta) or aortic aneurysm (a bulging section of your aorta).
  • Digestive problems such asgastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), an ulcer, gallstones, spasms in your esophagus, esophagitis, hiatal hernia or gastritis.
  • Lung problems such as a pulmonary embolism (a blood clot in an artery inside your lung), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pneumonia, pleurisy or pleuritis (inflammation of the membrane around your lungs) or a pneumothorax (collapsed lung).
  • Musculoskeletal problems, such as a broken rib or sprained chest muscle.
  • Cancer involving or effecting different structures in the chest.
  • Stress, anxiety or panic attacks.

Care and Treatment

What should I do if I have chest pain?

Do not ignore any type of chest pain or avoid getting treatment.

If your chest pain is new, comes on suddenly, or lasts longer than five minutes after you rest or take medication, call 911 or have someone take you to the closest emergency room.

If your chest pain goes away or comes and goes, see your healthcare provider as soon as possible to find out what is causing the pain, even if it is not severe.

What treatments are available for people with chest pain?

Treatment for chest pain depends on the cause of the pain. If your chest pain is caused by a heart attack, you will get emergency treatment as soon as you seek help. This can include medication and a procedure or surgery to restore blood flow to your heart. If your chest pain is caused by a non-cardiac condition, your healthcare provider will talk to you about treatment options.

How can I prevent chest pain?

You can reduce your risk of heart, vascular and other diseases by following a healthy lifestyle. This includes:

  • A healthy diet. Your healthcare provider or registered dietitian can help you create an eating plan that is right for you.
  • Managing health conditions you have, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes.
  • Exercising most days of the week.
  • Reaching and maintaining a healthy weight.
  • Limiting the amount of alcohol you drink.
  • Not smoking or using tobacco/nicotine products.

When to Call the Doctor

When should I call my healthcare provider about chest pain?

Call 911 or have someone take you to the closest emergency room right away if you have chest pain that lasts longer than five minutes and does not go away when you rest or take medication. Cardiac chest pain can be life-threatening.

Chest pain can be serious. It may be caused by temporary poor blood flow to the heart ( angina ), or by a sudden blockage in the coronary arteries resulting in a heart attack .

If you have chest pain, seek urgent medical help. Call 000 for an ambulance.

There are other possible causes of chest pain such as indigestion and muscle strain. Aside from the heart, many parts of the chest that can cause chest pain include the lungs, oesophagus (gullet), muscle, bone and skin.

Because of the complex system of nerves in the body, the cause of the chest pain may come from elsewhere in your body, such as your stomach (abdomen). This is known as ‘referred pain’.

In a heart attack, every minute counts. Urgent treatment is needed to prevent damage to the heart.

If you think you are having a heart attack, or you are in doubt about the cause of your chest pain, call 000 for an ambulance.

Chest pain – symptoms of a heart attack

Chest pain can be a warning sign of a heart attack. A heart attack happens when the blood supply to your heart becomes blocked and damages the heart muscle.

The longer a heart attack is left untreated more damage occurs. In some cases, a heart attack can be fatal. Many Australians die of heart attack, or suffer permanent damage to the heart because they don’t know the signs or wait too long to act.

  • Severe crushing pain in the centre of your chest or behind the breastbone. You may feel this as a squeezing, tightening, choking or heavy pressure feeling.
  • Pain spreading to the shoulders, arms, neck, throat, jaw or back.
  • Sweating.
  • Feeling anxious, dizzy or unwell.
  • A sick feeling in the stomach.
  • Shortness of breath.
  • Symptoms that often last 10 to 15 minutes or more.

Symptoms of a heart attack may vary from person to person, and some people have few symptoms or none at all.

Chest pain – angina

Angina is a short-lived chest pain that occurs when the heart muscle does not receive enough blood or oxygen – often when it has to work harder than usual. This can occur with exercise, stress, cold weather or after eating a large meal.

Angina pain eases with rest, or with the use of angina medicines.

Angina is usually caused by underlying coronary artery disease, where the arteries of the heart become narrow due to the buildup of plaque (fatty deposits) in the artery walls. This narrowing means that blood supply to the heart is reduced, causing chest pain (angina). Angina does not usually cause damage to the heart.

Angina and heart attack – risk factors

Angina and heart attack are usually caused by underlying coronary artery disease, which has certain risk factors – some you can change, others you can’t.

Risk factors you can change:

Risk factors you can’t change:

  • getting older – risk increases as we age
  • being a post-menopausal woman
  • family history of heart disease
  • ethnicity – Aboriginal Torres Strait Islander and certain other populations are at higher risk

It is important to remember that people without these risk factors can also experience angina or a heart attack.

Other common causes of chest pain

The symptoms of a heart attack are similar to other conditions, so your chest pain may have nothing to do with your heart.

Other common causes of chest pain include:

or stomach acid coming up the oesophagus (reflux). This common problem can be made worse by smoking, drinking alcohol or coffee, eating fatty foods and taking some drugs. You may feel this as a burning pain in the chest. It often goes away quickly after taking antacid or milk. .
  • Chest trauma ( rib fractures ).
  • Blood clots in your lungs (pulmonary embolism).
  • Chest muscle strains – these can be caused by vigorous exercise, physically active work, playing contact sport or lifting weights at the gym.
  • Inflammation in the rib joints near the breastbone (costochondritis). (or herpes zoster) or can cause chest pain before a rash forms.

Seek urgent medical help for chest pain

With chest pain, every minute counts. The faster you get to hospital for treatment, the better.

If any activity brings on chest pain, follow these steps:

1.Stop what you are doing and rest immediately.

2.Talk – tell someone how you feel.

If you take angina medication:

  • Wait 5 minutes. If you still have symptoms – take another dose of your medicine.
  • Wait 5 minutes. If your symptoms don’t go away…

3.Call 000 and chew on 300mg aspirin (if available).

  • Ask for an ambulance.
  • Don’t hang up.
  • Wait for the operator’s instructions.

Do not take aspirin if you have an allergy to aspirin, or your doctor has told you not to take it.

Remember, if you have any doubt about your pain, call an ambulance anyway.

Do not drive yourself to hospital. Wait for the ambulance. It has specialised staff and equipment that may save your life.

Diagnosis of chest pain

Before medical treatment can begin, the cause of the pain must be found. You may a have a lot of tests done including:

    – electrical tracing of the heart activity. – to measure markers from the heart and other organs. – to look at the lungs, heart and major blood vessels of the chest.

If your healthcare professional thinks you may have angina, they may order further tests to check the state of the blood vessels that supply your heart. They may also arrange an exercise stress test (on an exercise bike or treadmill) or other tests – such as an angiogram or CT scan of your chest.

It is not always easy to diagnose the cause of chest pain. Your doctor may need to see you more than once to be sure, and further tests may be needed, or you may be referred to a cardiologist (heart doctor).

Recovering from chest pain

If your doctor has ruled out serious causes of chest pain, it is likely you will make a full recovery. General self-care suggestions include:

Chest pain refers to pain felt anywhere in the chest area from the level of your shoulders to the bottom of your ribs. It is a common symptom. There are many causes of chest pain. This leaflet only deals with the most common. It can often be difficult to diagnose the exact cause of chest pain without carrying out some tests and investigations.

Chest Pain

In this article

It is important to take chest pain seriously because it can sometimes indicate a serious underlying problem. Any new, severe, or persisting chest pain should be discussed with your doctor. This is particularly important if you are an adult and have a history of heart or lung disease. If the chest pain is particularly severe, especially if it is radiating to your arms or jaw, you feel sick, feel sweaty or become breathless, you should call 999/112/911 for an emergency ambulance. These can be symptoms of a heart attack.

Causes of chest pain

There are many possible causes of chest pain. Below is a brief overview of some of the more common causes.

Angina is a pain that comes from the heart. It is usually caused by narrowing of the coronary arteries, which supply blood to the heart muscle.

In the early stages, blood supply may be adequate when you are resting. However, when you exercise, your heart muscle needs more blood and oxygen, and if the blood cannot get past the narrowed coronary arteries, your heart responds with pain.

The chest pain caused by angina may feel like an ache, discomfort or tightness across the front of your chest.

Heart attack

During a heart attack (myocardial infarction), a coronary artery or one of its smaller branches is suddenly blocked. This cuts off the blood supply to part of the heart muscle completely.

The most common symptom of a heart attack is severe chest pain at rest. Unless the blockage is quickly removed, this part of the heart muscle is at risk of dying. To find out more about the symptoms and treatments for a heart attack, see the separate leaflet called Heart Attack (Myocardial Infarction).

Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease

This is a general term which describes a range of situations including acid reflux and oesophagitis (inflammation of the lining of the oesophagus, or gullet).

Heartburn – usually a burning in the lower chest and upper abdomen – is the main symptom of gastro-oesophageal reflux disease. Severe chest pain can develop in some cases and can be mistaken for a heart attack. To find out more about the symptoms and treatments, see the separate leaflet called Acid Reflux and Oesophagitis (Heartburn).

The rib cage is a bony structure that protects the lungs. Softer, more flexible cartilage attaches the ribs to the breastbone (sternum) and the sternum to the collar bones (clavicles) at joints. In costochondritis, there is inflammation in one or more of these joints.

Costochondritis causes chest pain, felt at the front of the chest. This is typically a sharp, stabbing chest pain and is worse with movement, exertion and deep breathing.

Strained chest wall muscle

There are various muscles that run around and between the ribs to help the rib cage to move during breathing. These muscles can sometimes be strained and can lead to chest pain in that area. If a muscle is strained, there has been stretching or tearing of muscle fibres, often because the muscle has been stretched beyond its limits. For example, a strained chest wall muscle may sometimes develop after heavy lifting, stretching, sudden movement or lengthy (prolonged) coughing. The chest pain is usually worse on movement and on breathing in.

Anxiety is quite a common cause of chest pain. In some people, the chest pain can be so severe that it is mistaken for angina. Chest pain due to anxiety is known as Da Costa’s syndrome. Da Costa’s syndrome may be more common in people who have recently had relatives or friends diagnosed with heart problems, or in people who themselves have recently had a heart attack. Investigations show that the coronary arteries are normal with no narrowing.

What's causing your chest pain?

Chest pain is common but, understandably, it can be a source of anxiety. Most of us immediately .

How to shrink a photo in iphoto

Can I resize photos in iPhoto? I can only see how to crop. If iPhoto can’t do it, is there a recommended free (or inexpensive) software for simple editing such as resizing and cropping? Thanks much.

iMac G5 (20-inch), Mac OS X (10.7.5)

Crop to the dimensions you want (250×200 for example) and export (file menu ==> export) using a custom size setting the max dimension to what you want (250 in this example)

Helpful answers

You can resize in iPhoto, but it’s a crazy way to do it. You must use the File/Export.

I like using Graphic Converter, but I don’t think it’s free anymore. Maybe a free trial.

First, “crazy” wasn’t the best description to use and you make all valid points. But I meant it in one sense. Cropping is so simple in iPhoto. I use Graphic Converter and Photoshop Express and iPhoto is my go to App for cropping.

The only time I ever need to resize an image is for use in iWeb. For the web it seems you want the highest quality image with the smallest bits. With Graphic Converter, not only does it do that, but it tells me what it’s doing.

If all you want to do is resize an image an not be concerned about the data associated with it other that it’s dimensions, then iPhoto is perfectly fine.

But I do wish iPhoto had it’s own Edit option for Size vs the Export option. Just on users opinion.

And the Save Options

Not sure why you think that’s crazy. iPhoto preserves the original file, right? So, if you resized the image in iPhoto then you would have two copies who’s only difference was size. Waste of space. Why would you want a smaller size? It will be for a particular purpose: so export at that size, use the export and then trash it. No waste of space.

Re: Graphic Converter: Absolutely. That’s another example of two things: pay more for more options and that fine control is beyond the scope of iPhoto’s target user.

Nov 15, 2012 4:20 AM

I updated my post since your reply.

The target user is a person like jeammarieTodd that didn’t know to resize the photo by exporting it.

That’s exactly why I think “Size or Scale” need it’s own menu option.

Thank-you. I’m not familiar with Graphic Converter, but I’ll look for it.

I edit stories and photos for a jobs board, using WordPress. I used to use Piknik (not sure of spelling) but then Google acquired it and I don’t know what happened to it but I understand it’s not available like it used to be. I need to resize photos to one of two different sizes, either 250 x 200 pixels, or 250 x 148 pixels, 72 dpi. Sometimes a photo may need to be cropped, too. It’s awkward to say the least to have to crop in one program and resize in another, and some programs (I’m experimenting with Acorn on a free trial) don’t seem to let you control all the parameters.

Thanks for the input, everyone.

You can resize the images in WordPress when you’ve uploaded them.

Nov 15, 2012 3:58 PM

iPhoto will let you crop and then File/Export to resize. I think iPhoto automatically converts to 72 DPI.

The only advantage to Graphic Converter is you can really get the file size lower (in megabits) and removal of meta data where they load faster in a website.

Nov 15, 2012 4:02 PM

” You can resize the images in WordPress when you’ve uploaded them. “

Yes you can, but it’s not very precise. Large, small, medium, etc., don’t help. I need to be able to resize to specific dimensions, 250 x 200 and 250 x 148 pixels, at 72 dpi.

” iPhoto will let you crop and then File/Export to resize. I think iPhoto automatically converts to 72 DPI. “

The problem is that I’m not sure how to crop to be able to resize to the desired dimensions without distorting the aspect ratio. I seem to remember Picnik had a way to let me kind of feel my way through to get both the crop and resizing right, all in one program, so I didn’t have to make any “final” decisions until everything was right.

So I think I’ll check out Graphic Converter. It’s tax deductible, I guess, since I’m a contractor. Thanks again.

How to shrink a photo in iphoto

Your iPhone’s camera is a powerful tool with a great resolution, multiple photo formats, and even built-in editing tools.

You can use your Photos app to brighten or darken the image, crop the picture, and more.

One of these many tools includes the ability to resize your photos, using your built-in Photos app, or another that you download from the App Store.

Here’s how to do both, and resize your iPhone images however you like.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

iPhone 11 (From $699.99 at Best Buy)

How to resize an image on an iPhone in Photos

It’s possible to resize an image in the Photos app, with a variety of common dimensions available through the “Edit” menu.

1. Open your Photos app, and open the picture that you want to resize.

2. In the upper-right corner of the screen, tap “Edit.”

3. A new menu will open, with a variety of editing tools. You’ll want to tap the Crop icon at the bottom of the screen — it looks like two right angles intersecting.

4. Tap the icon that looks like a gray-and-black square at the top of the screen.

You’re now in the dimension editing menu. At the bottom of the screen, you’ll find a number of options.

  • “Original” will revert your image to its original dimensions.
  • “Freeform” will let you crop the image however you’d like, by dragging your fingers from the sides of the image inward.
  • “Square” will cut off the sides of your image so it can fit into a square.

After that, there are a number of preset length-and-height ratios. When you tap one, the dimensions will change immediately.

You can tap “Done” to save your changes, “Cancel” to discard them, or “RESET” (at the top of the screen) to start over.

While all of these iPhone image editing tools are decent, what none of them can do is control image resolution.

To ensure a given picture is of high enough resolution, you’ll need a third-party photo editing app.

How to resize an image on an iPhone using Image Size

Image Size is one of the best iPhone photo-resizing apps, and as long as you’re willing to view the occasional ad, it’s totally free.

Once you launch the Image Size app and grant it access to your photos, using it is easy.

Tap the icon of a photo at the top left of the app screen (it looks like a mountain inside a box) and select the photo you want to resize from your Photos library.

Now select the measurement format you wish to work with (from pixels to millimeters to inches) and enter the size you want the image to be, noting the maximum allowed.

As you enter the new size values, you’ll see the new size of the image displayed at the bottom of the screen.

Once you are happy with your picture’s shape and file size (and you have made any other edits within the app), tap the arrow facing down to a line at the bottom of the app to save the resized image back to your Camera Roll.

Whether you want to save room in your saved photos folder, or you just want a social-media friendly picture, resizing photos can help you manage your visual media.

Here’s everything you need to know about resizing photos on a Mac, whether you’re applying it to one photo or many.

How to resize images on Mac

In order to start resizing your photos, there are a couple of things you’ll have to do. First, locate the photo or photos on your computer — your Finder (the half-toned face icon in your bottom toolbar) is a good starting point.

Select your photo or photos in Finder, or if the photos are on your desktop, drag your mouse to highlight the photo or multiple photos at once.

In either case, here’s what you’ll need to do to continue:

1. Open your photo or photos in Preview by right-clicking and selecting “Open.” In case that isn’t the default app, you’ll need to right-click the photo or photos you’ve selected, then hover over “Open with” followed by “Preview.”

2. Select your photo or photos by highlighting them on the Preview sidebar. If you want to resize multiple photos at once, you’ll have to select all your desired photos by holding down the Command button and clicking each thumbnail you want to edit.

3. In the top toolbar, select “Tools” and then “Adjust size.”

4. Enter your desired specs in the pop-up menu. You can select preset pixel measurements by clicking the dropdown next to “Fit into.”

5. Click “OK.”

6. To save these new dimensions, click on “File” in the top toolbar, and then “Save.”

You’ll be able to adjust your photo by width, height, and resolution of the image.

In order to keep it from morphing strangely, however, make sure that the “Scale proportionally” box is ticked. Be aware that ticking that box means you can only dictate the measurement for either length or height — the other one will be determined automatically to keep the picture’s original proportions.

London, United Kingdom – April 16th, 2007 – Today Ubisoft, one of the world’s largest video game publishers, announced that Jam Sessions – a groundbreaking music title exclusively for the Nintendo DS system in which players actually strum a guitar via the Touch Screen to make music – will launch in EMEA territories this summer.

“Jam Sessions is an amazing title with limitless potential to entertain and engage a wide audience of people who love music, guitar and singing,” said John Parks, EMEA Marketing Director. “Basically, it’s a guitar in your pocket but that’s just the beginning. It’s a chance for people who have never thought of themselves as ‘musically inclined’ to jump right in and play through entire songs, compose their own music and sing along with friends.”

Players will rock out, or smoothly strum, on the lower screen of the Nintendo DS system, producing an authentic sound digitally remastered from an actual acoustic guitar. The simple interface will guide players into the various easy-to-play modes which include: Performance Mode, allowing users to sing and play along both yesterday and today’s hottest artists; Free-Play Mode, where people can play anything they chose; and Tutorial Mode where novice musicians will learn to play guitar without paying for lessons.

One of the most compelling features is the ability to record what you play and play it back, therefore making Jam Sessions virtual notepad for players to write, play and save their original music anytime, anywhere. The portability of the DS system makes Jam Sessions a complete concert-on-the-go entertainment system, perfect for parties and other social gatherings – simply hook up some external speakers via the headphone jack and you’re a rock star!

How to make a virtual notepad on a nintendo ds
I know what you're thinking, but Ubisoft's Jam Sessions for the DS isn't just a Guitar Hero rip off. It's more like what would happen if Guitar Hero and *Electroplankton had a baby. And isn't that just an interesting little mental picture? Moving on!
Jam Sessions
uses audio digitally mastered from a real acoustic guitar, and will allow players to play along with tracks from "the hottest artists of today and yesterday" (ugh), or just play whatever tune strikes their fancy. There will also be a tutorial mode that will teach the musically impaired (that'd be me) how to play guitar like a pro, or at least not look like a complete chump.

Where Jam Sessions trumps Electroplankton is in its ability to record and playback your play session, though you'll probably just end up with a few strums and some wank yelling "Freebird!"

__UBISOFT ANNOUNCES JAM SESSIONS TM GUITAR TITLE FOR NINTENDO DS TM __A Diverse Music Experience for Everyone: You Actually Play Music!

Ubisoft, one of the world’s largest video game publishers, announced that Jam Sessions™ – a groundbreaking music title exclusively for the
Nintendo DS™ system in which players actually strum a guitar via the
Touch Screen to make music – will launch in EMEA territories this summer.

“Jam Sessions is an amazing title with limitless potential to entertain and engage a wide audience of people who love music, guitar and singing,” said John Parks, EMEA Marketing Director.
“Basically, it’s a guitar in your pocket but that’s just the beginning.
It’s a chance for people who have never thought of themselves as
‘musically inclined’ to jump right in and play through entire songs, compose their own music and sing along with friends.”

Players will rock out, or smoothly strum, on the lower screen of the Nintendo
DS system, producing an authentic sound digitally remastered from an actual acoustic guitar.

The portability of the DS system makes Jam Sessions a complete concert-on-the-go entertainment system, perfect for parties and other social gatherings –
simply hook up some external speakers via the headphone jack and you’re a rock star!

Ow, and I tried using your alpha3.diff to compile it myself.. but it gave me an error on “sys/dir.h” which I guess is part of the fatlib for nds but I cannot find the file anywhere in my devkitpro installation? Could you perhaps help me with that?

Yes, I’ll do that. And hopefully I’ll get a website or blog to post random updates at some point.

I don’t know what’s the state of memory consumption, but to have bigger map, you can use some extra memory, for example with the nintendo ds browser “game” (I bought it new for 15€), there is 8MB extra memory on the slot2. The “little” problem is that you need to make your own memory allocator (or you can use this extra memory with static addresses for instance map at the beginning, chat history to base + size of map, or such things)

Also, the EZV 3-in-1 expansion pack has 16 MB extra ram, although both of these run slower than the DS internal ram, but dominik81 already knows this, he mentioned it on page 2

And lockhp, I can’t speak for dominik81, but I know that your post is what makes me want to do this kind of thing. To see the appreciation and happiness of the users is the best kind of reward there is, so it’s not a stupid post at all

Looking forward to the next test version, dominik81, it seems you’ve been quite busy fixing the glaring bugs and crashes since the last release

Why do you say that?

Because it has more code turning it more complex or you don’t agree the way the code evolved?

Re: Nintendo DS port

Post by DaleStan » 19 Jan 2008 06:18

More code. Lots and lots and lots more code.

The original TTD executable was 485 KB and it contained the entire game and all necessary strings for one language.

That same data, for OpenTTD, weighs in at approximately 3 MB. There is also the additional sprite data that Open requires, beyond the data TTD required:

Re: Nintendo DS port

Post by AlexFili » 20 Jan 2008 10:11

But don’t forget, OpenTTD is a lot more easier to be run on different operating systems. TTDPatch is rubbish in comparison.

By the way I saved my settings like you said (quitting), but when I went on “load” for a managers face. nothing happened. But my other settings have saved fine. Not sure if its a problem with the loading or the saving.

Again, good luck with the latest release. I BELIEVE IN YOU!

dominik81 wrote: Here it is, the very first sneak peak at my Nintendo DS port. While it looks pretty much the same as the last screenshots I posted, a lot has changed internally and it is running much smoother now. Through the elimination of the wasteful _chatmessage_backup (a 440KB global variabl ) it is now possible to load bigger maps, up to 128×256.

Other notable changes are:
– based on r11844
– maps up to 256×128 running (but saving only works for 64×64 right now)
– saving and loading works
– in openttd.cfg you can define a path where your data resides
– loading time greatly reduced from 45 seconds to 15 seconds
– rewritten the blitter to free 96KB of main RAM

Some serious bugs still remain:
– pathfinder crashes
– open road station gui, then click on road depot icon -> crash
– station gui crashes / not displayed correctly

To get it running you probably need to DLDI patch it. I have a R4DS card which takes care of patching by itself. Please report any bugs / hardware issues here.

Using Ds lite with R4 card.

How to refer to a non‐binary person

Monáe’s tweet came after the recent announcement of Sam Smith, who recently said they felt “just as much a woman as I am man”. Both celebrities joined the increasing number of young people who identify neither as male or female.

Non-binary people tend to prefer using they/them pronouns (although not exclusively – some use she and he interchangeably). If gender neutral pronouns intimidate you, you’re not the only one. As someone who is new to using them (a number of my friends have recently started to identify as non-binary), I confess it can be intimidating when you want to respect someone’s wishes without making any blunders.

Putting someone’s dignity before my shyness about how to use a pronoun is, of course, the bare minimum. But I admit to having made mistakes – even avoiding using pronouns in the past, for fear of getting it wrong.

It really isn’t that hard, however, to get it right.

Who uses they/them pronouns, and why?

More and more people are using gender-neutral pronouns. In 2015, of 4,000 students at Harvard who had submitted preferred pronouns, around 1% chose pronouns other than “he” or “she”. Last year, Merriam-Webster made the singular gender-neutral use of “they” its word of the year, based on the fact that it had seen a 313% increase in searches for its definition that year.

Reasons for choosing gender neutral pronouns are complex and personal. Some people do it because they don’t feel they fit into a gender. For others, it’s a form of protest: they contest rigid gender expectations and would rather live without them. Being gender non-conforming, right down to their pronouns, is how they choose to identify.

So please, if you learn someone uses they/them pronouns, don’t respond: “We get it OK – she’s gay!” – as my friend’s parents recently did.

Why they/them?

It is normal in the English language to use they/them pronouns when we don’t know the gender of the person to which we’re referring, or if we want our sentence to be applicable to all genders.

This isn’t new – the saying “Everybody loves their own mother” has been used since around late 1300. Both Jane Austen and Geoffrey Chaucer – who died in 1400 – used pronouns that way.

But what about the plural?

While it is no longer grammatically incorrect to use they/them as singular anymore, people still get confused about it. A friend’s parent recently responded to their pronouns, saying: “But if I tell Shelly you’re coming round for dinner, she’ll think you’re bringing extra people!”

Try this: if you are using the pronoun in a scenario where there is no confusion over singular versus plural, just go ahead and use it (“You are going to meet my friend Poppy today, I hope you like them”).

If you are using it in an instance where it might be misconstrued as plural, you can change the first part of the sentence to make it clear (“I may bring a friend, their name is Poppy”).

If you still feel that is confusing, you can be explicit (“I asked Poppy – who uses they/them pronouns – they might come”). This also takes the onus off your non-binary friend for having to explain it themselves later.

What to avoid

Avoid assuming every person’s gender. Feel free to ask people when you meet them what pronouns they use. Feel free to put your own pronouns in your email signature, or to introduce people using your pronouns (this can take the focus off non-binary people having to do all the work).

What to embrace

Embrace doing your own research on pronouns, without expecting non-binary people to educate you. Encourage open dialogue, which means being open about your own shortcomings or fears, when relevant. Ensure this is a means to steer conversation forward (“Hey, did I get that right just then?”) not back (“Well actually this is pretty scary for me, so you shouldn’t correct me”).

What if I get pushback?

People may use your respect for another’s pronouns as a means to argue with you about the broader political context around gender and/or LGBTQ rights. But you don’t need to be needlessly drawn into an argument unless that’s where you want to go. Briefly explain why you are doing it, and if the challenge escalates, consider shutting down the conflict (“It’s my choice to respect their wishes”; or even the more direct “I don’t want to argue about this”).

What if I make a mistake?

When you make a mistake, apologize, be gracious, and move on. Generally people aren’t out to get you. Don’t get too hung up: my experience is that people know getting it wrong is part of the process and are forgiving if they feel you are trying your best.

Sometimes you can check that you said the right thing first, rather than getting caught up in your head (“Hey, when I said that, was it offensive?’). Above all, recognize mistakes happen and apologies are OK, but don’t mistake them for real work. Saying sorry a handful of times might be fine, but if you’re misgendering someone over and over again you might want to think about why, and do better.

You’ll be OK

Exposure is key. Keep using they/them, and soon it will feel normal. That’s the aim.

January 07, 2021

My name’s Arlo, and I’m transgender. That means I don’t identify with the gender I was assigned at birth. I’m not a girl, and the thing is, I’m not a boy either. So the word I use to describe my gender is non-binary.

Here are some things you need to know to understand who I am.

What is the gender binary?

The gender binary is the Western concept that there are only two gender options: male or female. The most important thing to know about the gender binary is that it’s kind of a load of crap. Gender identity is one’s own internal experience and perception of self. And you know what? It’s completely separate to one’s sex.

What does non-binary mean?

In really simple terms, a non-binary person is someone who does not identify as exclusively a man or a woman. Someone who is non-binary might feel like a mix of genders, or like they have no gender at all.

Personally, I identify outside of the gender binary entirely. I am not a boy or girl at all. Some other non-binary people might identify partially with one or more of the binary genders – for example, a gender-fluid person (someone whose gender changes over time) who identifies as a girl sometimes and genderless other times. There are so many different ways to be non-binary, and we’re all still valid and real!

So, how different are you now?

In a lot of ways I’m same person that I’ve always been. If anything, I’m a more authentic version of myself now that I can be open with people in my life. Like everyone, I’m still figuring out exactly who I am, and as I keep finding what works best for me I’ll ask my friends and family to change some things about how they treat me.

Here are some of the changes I have made. These might last for the rest of my life, they might not even last for the rest of the year. The important thing is that this is who I am right now, and although I know that linguistic shifts can take time to get used to, it means the absolute world to me when people strive to consciously change some of these habits to respect my identity.

Pronouns are the words that take place of a person’s name. Pronouns don’t have a gender, but some people feel more comfortable with certain pronouns than others. I use the pronouns ‘they/them’ since they’re what fit me best. So if someone was talking about me, they’d say, “This is Arlo, they’re awesome.” or “Oh, Arlo – Yep I’ve met them before.”

Find out more about pronouns >>

They/them? Isn’t that plural?

Nope! They/them can refer to a single person as well. You’ve probably done it before usually when you don’t know someone’s gender. You might say something like “Is your friend coming to the party? Do I need to know anything about them?” Using they/them to refer to just one person has been around for a long time – even Shakespeare did it.

Gendered language

A lot of our language is gendered. Mother, brother, boyfriend, actress – the list goes on. I’m a lot more comfortable when people use gender-neutral language when referring to me, ie. person, friend, human, kid, adult, champion. I know that these can seem clunky and odd at first, but it makes me feel a lot more comfortable when you use them. Using gender-neutral language means a lot to me (and a lot of other non-binary people!), and using them will start to feel more natural as you get used to them.

Phrases like ‘ladies and gentlemen’ are also gendered, and when we use them we exclude people who aren’t ladies and who aren’t gentlemen. Instead, try phrases like ‘hey everyone’, ‘hey pals!’ or ‘distinguished guests’.

My name

Part of coming out as trans or non-binary for many people is choosing a new name (especially when an old name is a traditionally really gendered one). A lot of people know me by the name my parents called me when I was born, so it’s been a process for me to let them know about my new name: Arlo.

But there’s the thing – it’s worth the effort. Arlo is my name, and it’s important to me that I have a name that reflects who I am. Inviting people to know me as Arlo, to know me for who I really am, is a step I’m so glad I was able to take.

What next?

These are just some of the things that might change when a non-binary person publicly affirms their gender. It can be difficult to work out exactly how you want to express yourself, and it can be difficult to adjust as people you know change. But it can also be a wonderful experience to celebrate your gender, the same way friends and family celebrate their own.

I’ve been lucky enough to know some phenomenal people who have supported me, and been completely excellent in using my pronouns and name. I couldn’t have got this far without them. And that’s what it really comes down to. It means the world to non-binary people when they are supported – it did for me!

This quicktip was created in collaboration with Melinda Lee, Assistant Director, Gender and Sexuality Center for Queer and Trans Life.

Many people understand the existence of gender pronouns beyond the binary (she/her/hers or he/him/his). However, they may not be familiar with how to use those pronouns in sentences. As a result, even when they know the pronouns of reference for a person, they can struggle to incorporate those pronouns in their writing.

Learn the typical forms that nonbinary gender pronouns can take.

The following chart provides examples of some nonbinary gender pronouns in a variety of forms.

Proofread your writing.

No matter what pronouns appear in your sentences, it’s important that you are consistent in the pronouns you use to cite or refer to people. One way to check for consistency is to use Word’s Find feature (in the “Edit” menu) to search for the pronouns you’ve written in. For example, if you’re citing a writer who uses “they/them/theirs” pronouns and you’re concerned that you might have written a different one to refer to them, go to the Edit menu and select Find. Type in the author’s name in order to find all the sentences where you’ve cited them; that way, you can be sure to proofread each sentence that refers to the author. Or, you could use Edit>Find to search for any instances of, say, “she” that need to be changed to the appropriate pronoun.

Practice using nonbinary gender pronouns so that they become more automatic.

If you will be citing or referring to a person who uses nonbinary gender pronouns, practice reading and writing texts with those pronouns. At the Gender Neutral Pronoun Blog, each entry on a specific pronoun links to a passage from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland using that pronoun in place of “she/her/hers.” Reading these excerpts can familiarize you with how nonbinary pronouns appear in context. Another place to learn and practice using a variety of gender pronouns is the web-based Pronouns App, developed by the Australian youth-led LGBTI organization Minus 18.

Consider adding an explanatory footnote.

If your audience is not familiar with nonbinary pronouns, consider adding an explanatory footnote after your first use of a nonbinary pronoun. An example might be, “In this paper, I use the nonbinary gender pronouns [name them] because the people I am citing and/or to whom I am referring use these pronouns to refer to themselves. It is important to me that I respect their identities in my writing by using the appropriate gender pronouns.”

If you are using singular they, you may also wish to cite the International Writing Centers Association’s Position Statement on "Singular Use of ‘They.’"

How to refer to a non‐binary person

Recently, nonbinary (this will open in a new window) and genderqueer (this will open in a new window) voices are being heard in our media in a way they haven’t before – but what about in our fiction? With some publishers pushing for diversity, I’ve noticed more authors beginning to write characters whose gender identities lie outside the ‘male’ or ‘female’ binary. As a nonbinary writer (and reader!) I find the idea of more characters like me really exciting. As with any group of people, especially those who may be marginalised, though, it’s important to do your research and get it right before you jump in with two feet.

Examine the way you conceptualise gender

We’re raised to think of gender as just Female and Male, but the existence of genderqueer people proves it’s more complex than just one or t’other. How do you think of your own gender? Are you all male or all female? Is there a little wiggle room? Because we don’t fit with society’s concept of gender, nonbinary and genderqueer people are forced to always think about gender, so thinking about it yourself will help you get into your character’s head.

We don’t have to be aliens or faeries!

This is a pattern a lot of fantasy and sci-fi authors fall into: a nonbinary character who is nonbinary because they belong to a species/culture which has a different (or no) concept of gender. This is a perfectly legitimate way to do it; however, it’s important to remember that we’re also real people! If your only nonbinary characters are aliens and faeries, there’s an implication there that normal humans can’t identify outside the binary.

Remember that physical sex, sexuality, gender identity and gender expression are different things

Physical sex refers to a person’s bodily confirmation, i.e. their chromosomes, genitalia and internal sex organs. A person’s sexuality is who they’re attracted to. Your gender identity is how you think of yourself, and your expression of that is how you present yourself to the world. For many people, these characteristics all match, but for many they do not! For example a person can identify as neither male nor female but for social reasons present themself as only male or only female. A person can be born intersex (with irregular or “mismatched” physical sex characteristics) but might identify as only male or only female. These disconnects are really only possible to discuss for a POV character, in close narration, or if your story is about the character, but if you keep this in mind while writing any genderqueer character it’ll round them out nicely.

We don’t always look “androgynous”

There are about a million different ways to present as nonbinary.

This is connected to the previous point: there are about a million different ways to present as nonbinary, so when you’re describing your character, just using the word “androgynous” and moving on isn’t really going to work. What type of body shape does your character have? Do they wear “ambiguously” gendered clothes, or clothes for both men and women, or are they gender-fluid (with a changing gender identity) and present differently on different days?

Our gender is not the only thing about us

This one’s important! It’s really easy to write a gender-variant (trans, genderqueer or otherwise engaging unconventionally with gender) character and have them end up being one-dimensional, completely defined by their gender. While gender is something that most of us think about on a daily basis, remember while you’re writing that it’s not our defining characteristic. Give them other personality traits, interests and motivations and the character will be way more plausible.

Talk to a nonbinary or gender-variant person!

With all the furor lately surrounding sensitivity readers, it’s easy to forget that they’re there to help you write a better story. There are people whose job it is to flag up anything which might upset nonbinary (or any other demographic) readers and cause them to disengage or lose interest in your story. If you can’t afford a sensitivity reader but you’ve got nonbinary friends or acquaintances, try asking one of them for help with specific problems in your story. Obviously it’s not our job to educate you, and your acquaintance might be too busy or uncomfortable speaking for everyone in their group, but if you’re polite and make it clear you’re trying to educate yourself, it can’t hurt to ask!

How to beat cramps naturally

How to beat cramps naturally

Raise your hand if you’re popping pain meds basically every day of your period. Yeah, same.

Wish you could cut your Advil habit—at least in half? I got your back: There are actually tons of natural cures for cramps that can ease your intense aches (and save you some cash at the drugstore), sans chemicals.

Try these tactics next time the red tide rolls in.

1. Take a hot bath or shower.

Clearly, period pain is reason enough to draw yourself a steamy, sudsy bath or take a window-fogging long shower—but it turns out, that heat can be pretty therapeutic for your body, too.

“Heat brings blood flow to your pelvic area, and that helps relax the muscles causing cramps in the first place,” explains Alyssa Dweck, M.D., ob-gyn in Westchester, New York and coauthor of V Is for Vagina.

2. Make sure to stay hydrated.

It sounds counterintuitive, but drinking more water can actually help lessen bloating by keeping your digestive system, uh, running smoothly. Get even more water in your diet by adding in water-rich fruits and vegetables like cucumber and watermelon.

You can also go a step further and sip on warm or hot water, which can actually help lessen period cramps from the inside—heated beverages have a relaxing effect on muscles, says Dweck.

3. Stick on a heat wrap.

How to beat cramps naturally

No, you probably can’t stay in the bathtub all day, though it’s definitely tempting.

Instead, Dweck suggests using an adhesive heat pad (like these ThermaCare Heatwraps, specifically for menstrual pain) that fit under your tights or jeans to provide constant uterine muscle-soothing relief for up to eight hours. It’s a brilliant update from those old electric heating pads (or—cringe—hot water bottles) you probably relied on in high school.

4. Break a sweat.

A decent sweat session cranks up production of mood-boosting endorphins, which can actually act as a natural pain reliever, says Mary Jane Minkin, M.D., clinical professor of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences at Yale School of Medicine.

Even better: Exercise can also help prevent period cramps (or at least lessen them when they come along), says Dweck. “Consider ramping up your workouts the week before your period is supposed to start,” she says, for maximum benefits.

5. Have an orgasm.

Seriously, though. “An orgasm really does relieve cramps for some women,” says Dweck.

How to beat cramps naturally

It’s not exactly clear how it works, but why not find out if you’re in this lucky club by grabbing your guy (this period-sex primer explains how to get it on without ruining your sheets) or your vibrator for a solo session.

6. Treat yourself to happy hour.

Having a glass of wine (or alcoholic drink of your choice) can help relax your body’s smooth muscles, including those of the uterus. This can ease aches, says Minkin. “In the old days, we used to use intravenous alcohol for pre-labor contractions,” she says.

Something to keep in mind, though: If you’re taking medications—for your period cramps or otherwise—make sure it’s safe to drink alcohol on them before imbibing.

7. Sip ginger or cinnamon tea.

How to beat cramps naturally

Consuming any warm liquid can reduce cramp agony a little bit, but the secret here is the spice, says Dweck. Ginger has a long history as a natural pain-fighter, and cinnamon is considered an anti-inflammatory that helps reduce the uterine spasms that cause cramps.

Dweck also suggests trying peppermint or chamomile flavors, as they could help relieve pain, too; so if cinnamon or ginger isn’t your thing, give those teas a try.

8. Take a self-care day.

Booking a massage—complete with relaxing essential oils, like lavender—or an acupuncture appointment can help ease aches all over, so why not try it when you’re cramping? Dweck said it may provide a little more comfort. Plus, you’ll likely leave feeling zen enough not to worry about any of your problems, including pain.

9. Stick to a healthy diet.

In general, following a low-carb and low-sugar diet, along with having more fiber before and during your period can help stop discomfort that comes from this time of month, says Dweck.

Period poops are a real thing, so to keep things moving steadily (but not too fast), try to resist grabbing cookies or tons of chocolate. “All the things we crave [at this time of month], we probably shouldn’t have,” she says.

10. Unwind with a little yoga.

According to a 2017 scientific review published in The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, keeping up with a regular yoga practice can help with symptoms associated with menstruation.

The analysis included 15 studies of different types of yoga, from asana to pranayama and other relaxation and meditation techniques, and their affects on menstrual pain. All forms of the soothing workout included in the review led to lower pain scores.

Menstrual cramps, also known as dysmenorrhea, typically feel like a dull pain in the lower abdomen before or during menstrual periods. The pain sometimes radiates to the low back or thigh area. Other symptoms may include nausea, loose stools, sweating, and dizziness.

There are two types of menstrual cramps: primary and secondary dysmenorrhea. Primary dysmenorrhea, which usually starts within several years after your first menstrual period, involves no physical abnormality.

Hormone-like substances called prostaglandins, which are produced naturally in the body, are thought to cause these menstrual cramps and be responsible for the pain and inflammation. Secondary dysmenorrhea, on the other hand, has an underlying physical cause, such as endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, uterine fibroids, or uterine polyps.

Natural Remedies for Menstrual Cramps

If you are experiencing symptoms of menstrual cramps, it's important to see your healthcare provider to be properly diagnosed. Although certain natural remedies show some promise, there hasn't been enough research at this point to conclude that they are effective.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3 fatty acids are found in fish such as salmon, mackerel, sardines, and anchovies. They are also available in fish oil capsules, which may be the preferable form because many brands filter out any pollutants in fish, such as mercury and PCBs.

At least eight studies involving a total of 1,097 women have investigated the relationship between diet and menstrual cramps and have found that fish oil intake seemed to have a positive effect on menstrual cramps. Animal studies suggest that the two compounds in fish oil, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) may decrease prostaglandin levels.

In one small study, 21 young women took fish oil (containing 1080 milligrams eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), 720 milligrams docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and 1.5 milligrams vitamin E) daily for two months followed by a placebo pill for two months.

Another 21 young women took the placebo for two months followed by fish oil for two months. The results suggested that the women experienced significantly less menstrual cramps when they were taking the fish oil.

Fish oil capsules are sold in drug stores, health food stores, and online. Look for the active ingredients EPA and DHA on the label. Fish oil capsules may interact with blood-thinning drugs such as warfarin (Coumadin) and aspirin. Side effects may include indigestion and bleeding. To reduce fishy aftertaste, it should be taken just before meals.

Magnesium is a mineral found naturally in foods such as green leafy vegetables, nuts, seeds, and whole grains. It is also available as nutritional supplements. Magnesium is needed for more than 300 biochemical reactions. It helps to regulate blood sugar levels and is needed for normal muscle and nerve function, heart rhythm, immune function, blood pressure, and bone health.

In 2001, researchers with the Cochrane Collaboration reviewed three small studies that compared magnesium and a placebo for dysmenorrhea. Overall, they found that magnesium was more effective than placebo for pain relief and the need for additional medication was less with magnesium use. In the studies, there was no significant difference in the number of side effects or adverse effects between the magnesium and the placebo.

High doses of magnesium may cause diarrhea, nausea, loss of appetite, muscle weakness, difficulty breathing, low blood pressure, irregular heart rate, and confusion. It can interact with certain medications, such as those for osteoporosis, high blood pressure (calcium channel blockers), as well as some antibiotics, muscle relaxants, and diuretics.

Acupressure is a traditional healing practice that is based on the same principles as acupuncture. Instead of applying needles to acupuncture points, pressure is applied. A point that is often recommended by acupuncturists for menstrual cramps is called Spleen 6.

Although there are only preliminary studies on acupressure for menstrual cramps, it is a simple home remedy that is often recommended by alternative healthcare providers.
To find the point, acupuncturists suggest feeling the bony point of the inner ankle.

From that point, draw an imaginary line up the lower calf from the inner ankle. The point is approximately four finger widths from the inner ankle. It isn't on the shin bone, but just beside it towards the back of the calf.

With your thumb or middle finger at a 90-degree angle to the skin, apply gradually increasing pressure. Hold for three minutes. The pressure should not be painful or uncomfortable. Acupressure to the Spleen 6 point should not be done if you are pregnant. It should also not be done over broken or infected skin.

Due to a lack of supporting research, it's too soon to recommend any natural remedy as a treatment for menstrual cramps. Supplements haven't been tested for safety and due to the fact that dietary supplements are largely unregulated, the content of some products may differ from what is specified on the product label.

Also keep in mind that the safety of alternative medicine in pregnant women, nursing mothers, children, and those with medical conditions or who are taking medications has not been established.

If you're considering the use of any form of alternative medicine, talk with your primary care provider first. Self-treating a condition and avoiding or delaying standard care may have serious consequences.

Try ice-packs, turmeric and alum paste, salt or drumstick leaves to combat muscle cramps naturally.

Written by Bhavyajyoti Chilukoti | Updated : June 13, 2015 1:48 PM IST

Muscle cramps are common during winters and most people get painful cramps during nights. Although they may last just for a few seconds, it can be quite frustrating to deal with cramps every time. But before you grab those painkillers (medications and sprays), try some easy and effective natural remedies get relief. Apart from being easily available in your home, these natural remedies for muscle cramps are quick in action and comparatively safe.

Ice-pack: You may also undo a muscle cramp with ice as it acts an effective pain reliever and an anti-inflammatory agent. All you need to do is massage the area with ice for no more than 10 minutes or until the area is bright red, which indicates that blood cells have returned to heat the cramped muscle.Read more about health benefits of ice.

Turmeric and alum: Turmeric is one of the potentantiseptic compounds which is widely used as a pain reliever, while alum is well-known for its soothing and blood thinning property. When the two are combined, they provide effective result against muscle cramp. Apply a thick past of turmeric and alum over the affected area. Do not massage the area and leave it to dry. Doing this at least twice a day for two days aid in reducing pain and swelling due to muscle cramps. Here s how to get instant relief from muscle cramps with turmeric and alum.

Warm compress: Another age-old remedy to combat muscle pain caused due to crampsis to try warm compress. This is because, heat improves superficial blood circulation and makes muscles more flexible, so some people find that heat is more soothing for muscle cramps than ice. Applying a heating pad on the affected area for not more than 10 minutes or even a warm shower or bath, might do the trick for you.

Wintergreen oil: Wintergreen oil (which is available in the market) contains a compound known as methyl salicylate, which acts as a powerful pain reliever along with stimulating blood flow. To reap its pain relieving properties, mix two teaspoon of wintergreen oil to eight teaspoons of vegetable oil (any oil will do) and massage the affected area. Do this several times a day to attain quick relief. Here are 6 tips to beat muscle cramps.

Drumstick leaves: Drumstick leaves significantly reduce pain and cramping due to its anti-inflammatory properties. Apart from improving the flow of blood, drumstick renders a wide range of health benefits. Take a few drumstick leaves, wash and crush them to extract their juice. Now, massage the area with this juice. Alternatively you can slightly warm drumstick leaves, put them in a muslin cloth and tie this cloth around the area to relieve pain.

Salt: Easily available in any household, common salt is an amazing home remedy to get rid of muscle cramps. As lack of sodium in the body triggers muscle cramping, intake of fluids containing salt might do the trick. All you need to do is add 2-3 teaspoon sugar and 1/2 teaspoon salt and lemon juice to a litre of water and drink this solution at intervals to get rid of cramps. You can also apply salt pack (heat a fistful of salt over a pan, put it in a cloth) over the affected for relief.

Stretching: Stretching is one of the most effective home remedy to beat muscle cramps of various parts of the body namely legs, arms, thighs, calf and palm. Do some stretching exercises for at least 5 to 10 minutes (as warm-up and cool-down periods) to combat pain. Read in detail about how to get rid of those muscle cramps for good!

Muscle cramps, often associated with strenuous exercise, can sometimes be partially caused by a poor diet. Regularly incorporating certain foods into your diet can potentially help prevent cramping, or at least make it a less frequent issue.

Potassium is the main mineral known for cramp prevention. It's an essential mineral that can aid communication between muscles and nerves. Although potassium is often associated with bananas, those sweet fruits actually aren't a very high source, providing just nine percent of your daily recommended intake. Instead, reach for one of the five foods and drinks listed below to help out with muscle cramps.

Sweet Potatoes

One medium cooked sweet potato has roughly 542 mg (12 percent of your Daily Value) of potassium. Add in their high levels of vitamin A and you've got a winner all around. Try them baked, roasted, or mashed.

Dehydration can sometimes be the cause of muscle cramps. Making sure to stay fully hydrated can contribute to keeping cramps at bay. If water seems boring to you, try pumping up the taste by creating one of our Infused Water Recipes. Or if you forget to keep hydrated, try one of our 9 Easy Ways to Drink More Water.

Enjoy two slices of watermelon and you'll be eating 640 mg (14 percent of your Daily Value) of potassium. If you're not interested in eating it alone, try it in our Hot-Sweet Grilled Watermelon, Watermelon-Tomato Salad, or a plethora of other recipes.

Although the exact reason that pickle juice helps with cramps is still unknown (it's speculated it might be something to do with the vinegar it contains), a 2013 study suggests that it can reduce the amount of time a cramp lasts. We recommend taking it as a small shot (if you're sensitive to sodium, check with your doctor first) and saving the rest to use as a marinade.

Different varieties have different levels, but overall beans are a good source of potassium. One cup of kidney beans contains 717 mg (15 percent of your Daily Value) of potassium, while a cup of black beans contains a whopping 801 mg (17 percent of your Daily Value). Use beans in chili, soups, dips, and more.

How to wire an electric dryer

The first step in how to wire a dryer is to review your electrical configuration. Electric dryers typically require a dedicated 30-amp, 240-volt breaker. The wire supplying power from the breaker panel to your dryer outlet will usually be a 10/3 Romex cable (Blk wire- hot, Red wire – hot, White wire – neutral, Bare copper wire – ground).

New dryers do not come with a power cord. That's because until recently, homes were wired with two different receptacle styles: 3-prong and 4-prong. Knowing that homes had a variety of outlet types, it didn't make sense for appliance manufactures to pre-wire the stove with one or the other. The 4-prong plug adds a safety ground wire in addition to the two hots and neutral found on the 3-prong plug. Below are pictures of both a 3-prong and 4-prong style outlets with respective labeling. With a voltmeter you can check for proper voltage on the wall outlet before plugging in your appliance. You should measure 220-240VAC between lines (hots), and half of that voltage if you measure between either of the hots to neutral. If you are wondering how to wire a dryer with a 4 prong plug but you have a 3 prong wall receptacle you have a couple of options. One is to upgrade the wall receptacle to a 4 prong receptacle. Hopefully there is a ground wire already to the electrical box. otherwise this option will not work. The second option is the leave the 3 prong wall receptacle as is and purchase a 3 prong cord for your new dryer. Most dryers will accommodate this configuration as they know a lot of people still have the 3 prong receptacles in their homes that they must make work.

How to wire an electric dryer How to wire an electric dryer

If wiring a newer dryer into an older home, containing a 3-wire outlet, you can do so with the diagram to the left. The dryer will need to have a copper grounding strap between neutral and the green grounding screw. The grounding screw will connect directly to the dryer chassis or frame. The hots (black and red) are connected as shown and the neutral wire gets tied to the center lug.

Instructions on How to wire a Dryer:

The following instructions cover how to wire a dryer with a 3 prong cord:

Another option would be to upgrade the 3-prong outlet in your house to a 4-prong. Once you do that, you can follow the 4-wire hook shown below.

History of 3-wire vs. 4-wire dryer wiring:

In all houses the neutral wire and the ground wires are connected together. but ONLY at the main panel.

Not long ago houses were being built with a 3-prong dryer receptacle, while mobile homes were required to have a 4-prong receptacle. The 4-prong receptacle has a separate prong for the ground wire, the 3-prong receptacle either didn't use the ground, or the ground was tied together with the neutral.

With the 1996 National Electrical Code revision they stopped allowing this loophole in an otherwise sensible wiring system. Now all dryers (and electric ranges) must be wired with a 4-prong outlet.

It is very easy to understand why many people get confused when attempting to install an electric dryer. For starters, the heavy cable used on an electric dryer may have three or four heavy wires. Since 2000, electrical code states that four wires are required. For many people fooling with these heavy wires is very intimidating. The wires are heavy gauge because the dryer heating element draws 15 Amps. Normal lamp cord wiring will get hot and melt. I have seen many novices cause a lot of trouble by mixing heavy and light gauges. Most folks are frightened away by the heavy wires and leave the job to appliance technicians or electricians.

How to wire an electric dryer

Many different situations are encountered. If a person moves an old dryer to a new house they may be faced with an old three-prong line cord on the dryer and a four-prong outlet.

Second, a new dryer does not come with a line cord. Often a retailer will sell the customer a four-prong cord (The current code). When they get home, they find that their house has a three-prong outlet and they don’t know what to do. Of course, they are irritated because they thought all they had to do was plug it in and start drying clothes. I must admit that fewer and fewer homeowners attempt to connect up anything involving 220 V. It scares them to death. However, this post will explain the logic behind the national code changes and how to handle these situations.

First, let’s review a bit of history. When electric dryers first came out 60-70 years ago they were all hardwired to the house (no cords were made back then). The cable used was 10-3 with the ground. It included four wires. Three of the wires were 10 gauge a black, white and red. The fourth wire was 12 gauge, bare copper.

How to wire an electric dryer

The three colored wires were attached to the terminal block on the back of the dryer with the white wire going to the center. The bare copper wire was screwed to the metal frame or shell or the dryer. The red and black are interchangeable but typically the red is connected to the right-hand side of the block. Nothing could be simpler. It was hard to get it wrong. The white wire and the bare ground wire parallel one another back to the panel box and are connected together and to the earth. The neutral wire carries minimal current while the red and black carry the heater circuit. The bare ground wire carries no current and it’s purely a safety circuit.

As the years went by new homes were built with a dryer outlet already installed in the wall and three-prong line cords were made available to connect the dryer to the heavy outlet. These line cords were three wire only and did not include the bare wire. How to wire an electric dryer

A cautious electrician or homeowner would add a bare wire, a ground wire, from the case of the dryer to the metal case of the outlet or a water pipe. This insured that the metal case of the dryer was directly connected to the earth ground through the electrical system of the house. By doing so it was impossible to get a shock by touching the dryer.

How to wire an electric dryer

A grounding strap was added next to the terminal block inside the dryer connecting the center tab (the white one) to the chassis metal of the dryer. This was the second way of ensuring that the metal case was connected to earth because the white center wire is connected to the earth back at the panel box. All of these shenanigans are in place to prevent or dissipate any voltage from appearing on the case of the dryer thus preventing electrocution.

How to wire an electric dryer

With the advent of the extra-safe four-wire heavy line cord the missing bare ground wire from decades gone by has reappeared within the line cord. It is the fourth wire and color-coded green. This green wire is to be connected to the chassis or case of the dryer. The grounding strap within the dryer (supplied by the manufacturer) is removed. The new green wire takes it place.

How to wire an electric dryer

Back at the panel box the green wires, any bare copper wires, the white center neutral wire are all connected together and directly connected to the utility ground and also to a heavy copper rod that is driven into the earth.

How to wire an electric dryer

Back to the problem at hand, it is far easier to change the line cord then it is to change the socket.

How to wire an electric dryer

Consequently, match your line cord prongs to the socket holes and by a line cord that fits.

Wire the matching cord as shown here.

Can a 220 circuit function safely with no separate neutral. In other words, with 2 110’s and a ground?

Each of your 110VAC circuits already has a neutral wire. However it’s more complicated than that as what you are are doing is not code nor safe. You must be connected to a 220VAC breaker to get both sides of the incoming 220VAC to the house. Get an electrician!

3-Prong Dryer Outlet

How to wire an electric dryer

The 3 prong wiring diagram above shows the proper connections for both ends of the circuit. This circuit originates from the breaker box containing a 2-pole 30 Amp breaker. This size breaker requires a minimum of a #10 gauge wire so this wire used would be a 10/2 with ground.

Now a 3-prong outlet is outdated from modern electrical codes but is accepted if you already have one in your home. If your running a new circuit, I highly recommend that you bring your outlet up to code and install a 4-prong dryer outlet. (See Below)

The difference between this diagram and the 4-prong outlet below is the addition of a neutral wire. The neutral line is a return line for the voltage and should not be done through the green ground wire, even though a neutral and ground are really the same, so new codes require a dedicated neutral line as well as a dedicated ground line. This just simply separates the ground circuit and neutral circuit versus having the ground line act as a neutral in the older circuit above.

Clear as mud right,

4-Prong Dryer Outlet

How to wire an electric dryer

(Yellow Wire = White)

The 4-prong dryer outlet wiring diagram above is ran with a 10/3 with ground cable.
As you can see, there is now an added dedicated neutral. The ground is now a dedicated wire also. But if you notice, both the neutral and the ground wires both connect to the same ground bar inside the panel box. As mentioned earlier, the neutral and ground are really the same but this wiring method is more accurate because a return line or “grounded neutral” should be a white wire and not green.

Some panel or breaker boxes will have a dedicated neutral bar and a dedicated ground bar, but they will still be physically connected.

How to transfer content from the pokémon sun and moon demo to the full games

How to transfer content from the pokémon sun and moon demo to the full games

Pokemon Sun & Moon’s special demo is now available to download for Nintendo 3DS via the eShop, and offers a tiny slice of what fans can expect from the highly anticipated game that’s set to celebrate Pokemon’s 20th anniversary.

The demo is a pretty cool freebie since it actually uses locations and other assets from the game but is built as a small stand-alone slice of Pokemon Sun & Moon. By playing it, you’re not spoiling or seeing any of the story of the actual game itself, but rather getting an introduction to its mechanics, world and characters in a one-off spin-off piece.

It gives you a small glimpse taking photos, Pokemon Battles, riding Pokemon, the land of Alola and the game’s newfound sense of style in its presentation, something I greatly praised in my hands-on experience with the full version of the game.

The demo is only 30 minutes long, but it’s well worth your time. As well as the introduction, you’re able to unlock items in the demo that you can transfer over to the final game. In case you’re at all confused or hit a road-block, here’s the important stuff you need to know about that:

How to get Ash Greninja and transfer it to Pokemon Sun & Moon

Getting your hands on Ash Greninja isn’t actually a difficult thing at all. You won’t need to catch this Pokemon or do anything special to obtain it – in fact, the very first scene of the demo is you getting hold of it for free.

As you play through the demo you’ll use this Greninja for a few battles. All of this is easy; the demo is designed to be easy-going for new players. Eventually you’ll have to use the Poke-finder to find 4 Pokemon as part of the storyline – do so. If you’re not sure where they are, we’ve got you covered:

Pokemon Sun & Moon Demo: Trial Pokemon Locations

  1. Inside the hole that’s in the wall directly to the left of the Professor when you start
  2. Follow the path to the Professor’s left, diagonally down. At a fork in the cave, head upwards. You’ll find another hole in the wall just after the fork.
  3. Continue on the path from the previous bullet point down and to the left. Don’t fall down the ledge, and you’ll find this Pokemon at the path’s end.
  4. Leave the cave from the exit in the top left exit, and then head north from there – it’s right in front of you.

After all this, you’ll find yourself going through a few more battles and also have access to a Pikachu for your troubles. Eventually, you’ll battle Team Skull Admin Plumeria. This is the final battle of the demo, but is still really easy, so don’t sweat it.

How to transfer Ash Greninja to Pokemon Sun & Moon

Once you’ve completed the demo, you can restart the demo over and explore the city of Hau’oli. There are some extra goodies you can find post-completion if you explore around, but more important than that is that this is where you’ll get the chance to send Greninja over to Pokemon Sun & Moon proper. Here’s how you do it.

  • Once you have the full game either on a cart or as a download, have it downloaded to your 3DS or have the cart installed. If you have both the cart installed and the digital version downloaded for some reason, the transfer will default to the cart rather than the download.
  • Load up the demo again and head to the city’s Pokemon Center.
  • Inside the Pokemon Center, chat to Professor Kurui.
  • He’ll chat to you a bit. When given the chance, select ‘send to full version. He’ll do the rest.

The Ash Greninja actually has some pretty impressive stats. I’ll let this excited Pokemon fan on YouTube explain – he crunches the numbers and realizes it’s quite an impressive Pokemon, and thus a decent bonus.

Other bonuses you can transfer

In addition to Ash Greninja, there’s also other bonus items you can find once the demo has been completed. Watch the little trailer for the full game, then boot right back into the demo.

You’ll pick up where you left off and with freedom to explore. You’ll also be given a Ride Pager, and this will let you ride a Tauros and smash through rocks, which will open up a few extra areas of the demo as a result.

There’s also NPCs who seem to hint that events are going to happen inside the demo in the coming days based on the real world date. We’ll check up on some of this and update this page as we figure all that out – so stick with us. We’ll update this page.

The most recent mainline entries in the Pokémon series are the just-released Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon, and while both newcomers and veterans already know what’s largely in store because of the recent data mine, there’s still plenty of nooks and crannies to chart, and one of this is Ash-Greninja.

Players were able to play a demo version of the games a month ago, with the embattled Greninja as a default Pokémon, which was promised to be transferable from the demo version to the full games once released.

If you’re one of those who have completed the demo and have been impatiently waiting for the full games to arrive, here’s a handy guide explaining how to transfer Ash-Greninja to the full game.

How To Transfer Ash-Greninja To Pokémon Sun And Moon

Firstly, you must download the special demo of Pokémon Sun and Moon from the Nintendo eShop. Needless to say that you must complete the main story mode, otherwise Greninja won’t assume its Ash form since it requires you to finish the trials before it can listen to any of your commands.

Obviously, you must also have a copy of the full game and create a save data.

You can then head back to the demo version. Assuming you’ve completed all the tasks required in the special demo, head over to the Pokémon Center and talk to Professor Kukui. He will ask what you want to transfer. You can opt to transfer Ash-Greninja along with items you’ve successfully collected while on the island.

How To Unlock Ash-Greninja In The Full Game

Once you’ve completed the transfer process in the special demo version, switch to the full game on your 3DS. Keep in mind that if you have both the cartridge and digital versions of either Pokémon Sun or Moon, your Ash-Greninja and other items will be routed to the cartridge version.

Play Pokémon Sun and Moon far enough to a point where you’ve reached your first Pokémon Center. A guy wearing a striped shirt should be inside. Reserve an empty spot in your party and talk to the guy. He will give you your Ash-Greninja alongside other items you have transferred from the demo, if any.

You have now successfully received your Level 36 Ash-Greninja, but you need to wait a while before you can use it. You can still send it out in battles, but it may not obey you at times. You need to advance through the game in order for higher-level Pokémon to follow your commands, which has been always the case in all Pokémon games.

Pokémon Sun and Moon are out today. If you’re stumped, here’s a handy tip on what version to get and a number of tips on how to navigate your way through Alola, touted as the most unique region of all Pokémon games.

Pokemon Sun and Moon has a demo out now that allows players to unlock the brand-new Ash Greninja for use in the full games once they release. However, there are other items that can be obtained and brought to the soon to release games. Here’s what they are and how to get them.

You can obtain three Stardusts in the demo that can be transferred in the game. To obtain these, you’ll have to go to the end of the road where the Pokemon Center is where you’ll find a bunch of Slowpokes blocking the path. When you reach them, talk to the NPCs to the left and you’ll find yourself at the Mahalo Trail. Using the Ride Pager item you obtain in the demo, you can smash through the rocks you find at the top where you’ll find these Pokemon Sun and Moon items.

You’ll once again need to break through some rocks to obtain this item, only this time it will be with a Tauros at Ten Carat Hill. This will grant you access to the Pokemon Catching Challenge, which is the only part of the demo that lets you catch Pokemon (although you can’t keep them). If you catch at least three, you’ll then be given the Nugget item.

Star Piece

This item is obtained in Ten Carat Hill. There are three trainers here for you to fight, and you’ll need to beat all of them. This will let you fight Ace Trainer Sheri who can be found in the beginning of Ten Carat Hill. She uses a Jangmo-o and a Pikachu. Beat them both and you’ll get this Star Piece.

These are the only items we know of so far, so be sure to check back in for more updates on Pokemon Sun and Moon.

Before the worldwide release of “Pokemon Sun and Moon”, Nintendo 3DS players were able to enjoy a demo version of the game where they were not just able to get free items but own a special Ash-Greninja too. Now as the game is now available for everyone, players should not forget to transfer their Ash-Greninja to their inventory bag as they play the game’s full version.

How to Transfer Ash-Greninja to the Game?

The first thing a player must make sure for the transfer to be possible is to have both the demo version and ‘Pokemon Go and Sun’ full edition installed in the Nintendo 3DS. Then just start the demo version and go to the Pokemon Center. Look for Professor Kukui and you will be asked if you wish to bring the full version. Select Ash-Greninja and any item you want to go with him to the game. Once completed, you can finally enjoy your Ash-Greninja in the full version of the game.

However, if you’re Nintendo 3DS is running a card and a digital version of ‘Pokemon Go and Sun’, your 3DS will prioritize the card version. So in a situation like this, it’s best to remove the card first from the console if the player prefers to have all the items and Pokemon into the digital copy.

Successfully Transferring Ash-Greninja

After the transfer, start the ‘Pokemon Go and Sun’ game and players will find a new NPC at the counter in the Pokemon Canter. Speak to this person so the player can finalize the transfer. Don’t forget to make a spot for Ash-Greninja to your party before speaking or you would be asked to do so before you can finalize the transaction.

Now once you have your Ash-Greninja in ‘Pokemon Go and Sun’ full edition, it’s going to take a while before you can get it to listen to you. So don’t give up and continue improving your relationship with it.

How to choose a coffee table

The recent months at home have led many people to reevaluate the comfort and configuration of their furniture.

Whether you want to purchase all new furniture or upgrade the look of your family room, your coffee table may be a good place to start. If you’re like most people, your coffee table functions as a serving table, a footrest, a repository for books and magazines, a workstation and your jigsaw-puzzle spot. Choosing the right size, shape and material for your coffee table can make a big difference in how it works and how long it lasts.

Get the full experience. Choose your plan ArrowRight

We asked two interior designers for tips on how to make this important choice: Robin Rains, owner of Robin Rains Interior Design in Nashville, and Heather Hilliard, owner of Heather Hilliard Design in San Francisco. Here are their four tips via email:

1. Size and placement are key. It’s important to get the right size and shape table for your room, so get out your tape measure before searching, Rains wrote.

“The height of the table should be generally between 14 to 20 inches tall,” she wrote. “I prefer the table to be approximately two inches lower than the seat height on your sofa. Keep approximately 16 inches from the edge of the table to the sofa and at least 28 to 30 inches to the TV cabinet or furniture opposite the sofa. A table should be two-thirds the length of your sofa for correct proportion.”

Hilliard prefers a maximum of 18 inches between the coffee table and the edge of the furniture it serves.

“Less than 18 inches spacing narrows circulation and greater than 18 inches of space makes it a stretch to set down a drink or rest your feet,” she says. “If the chairs perpendicular to your sofa seem to be crossing into the space in front of your sofa, your coffee table needs to be longer.”

2. Check the proportions and visual impact. A storage ottoman or closed-volume table will feel weighty in a room, Hilliard wrote, so consider an oval to make the piece appear a little sleeker and a neutral color to keep it understated.

“A glass coffee table will add lightness and airiness to the space, but it isn’t suitable for bearing a lot of weight, resting feet or being bumped into by little ones,” she wrote. “A rich material choice with treasured objects atop it will draw the eye, so keeping other design choices clean-lined and more monochromatic will stave off visual overload.”

When it comes to furnishing a room, buying a coffee table might not be first on your list. Perhaps you are more focused on finding the right couch for your space or the perfectly comfortable armchair. But according to Los Angeles-based interior designer and CEO of KMW Interiors Kita Williams, the coffee table is often the anchor in the room — especially in larger living spaces. Some of the best styles to consider include coffee tables with lift tops for extra utility, coffee tables with storage for similar function and round coffee tables to manage smaller spaces.

. a good place to start the narrative that will be your living room

Kita Williams, interior designer and CEO of KMW Interiors

“Between the coffee table and the rug, you have an excellent place to build the seating area around,” Williams told NBC News Shopping. “A hearty piece . can be a good place to start the narrative that will be your living room.” Whether you want a coffee table that is understated and function-forward or one that makes a statement, it’s worth determining first what the right coffee table is for your living space.

Lifestyle Getting started with an air fryer? Here's what you need to know

What to consider when buying a coffee table

“The most important factor to consider when picking a coffee table is utility,” Williams said. “How will it be used?” Utility is the optimal starting point here.

When buying a coffee table, you’ll want to figure out what works best for your home/place. Perhaps you’re looking for one that provides extra storage space for blankets. With work from home being the new norm, you may be looking for a coffee table with a lift top to function as a desk. Or if you’re looking to upgrade your decor, you may want to try an accent piece or something simpler to display your coffee table books, hold your wine or house plants.

“I can’t say that a coffee table is ‘discrete.’ Even when you get a self-assembled IKEA coffee table, it can make a statement,” Williams said. Anyone entering your living room is going to have “some kind of view or interaction with your furniture,” she added, “no matter what [or] where it comes from.”

“What may seem discreet or nondescript in your mind will always create a conscious and subconscious impression on your guest (and even you) when you engage with it in any way,” Williams asserted. In other words, all coffee tables make a statement. The best coffee table for you is one that reflects the statement you want to make — even if it’s a non-statement.

Best Coffee Tables of 2020

The best coffee table for you is one that meets your needs in regard to price, look and function. To help you get started, we’ve rounded up some coffee tables in different styles and at different price points, based on guidance from Williams.

1. IKEA KRAGSTA Coffee Table in Dark Blue-Green

“In a very small living space, I prefer a round coffee table. It is easier to get around and is still functional,” Williams said. “It also cuts down on the incidents of bumping into hard or sharp edges.”

A round coffee table can really soften your space, too, and pairing that with a bold color can help make a statement — a great example of checking many boxes with an affordable and compact coffee table. It’s also available in a few neutral shades: Black, White, and Light Beige. But the dark blue-green is both trendy and elegant. If you’re looking for something to hold your beverages and add color to a room, this piece is great for you.

2. IKEA KVISTBRO Storage Table in White

“I also recommend something that is possibly multi-functional that could perhaps provide much needed storage for items,” Williams said. Function, however, sometimes means a larger piece.

For a “comfortably usable” living space, Williams recommended ensuring you have 16 inches of free space around the coffee table. If that number is out of reach considering a smaller living space (as is often the case in places like New York City), IKEA’s KVISTBRO is another safe bet and even more affordable. It offers storage for blankets or other items you don’t mind displaying.

Choosing a coffee table is one of the most important, yet often overlooked decorating decisions you’ll have to make. Coffee tables are often centrally located and they serve a very practical purpose inside of a living room. After all, without a coffee table, where would we put our favorite drinks, decor magazines, remote controls, and iPhones?

The coffee table is arguably what gives a living room the most character. It typically holds personal items and decor accents from the home owners, reflecting their personalities.

Personally, I think the coffee table is the second most fun part of designing a living room after picking out the sofa! From marble to reclaimed wood, there are so many fun coffee table designs to choose from – it’s hard to pick just one!

Here are some guidelines and ideas for picking out the best coffee table for your family room!

Choosing a Coffee Table

A coffee table should be proportionate in size to the sofa. As a good rule of thumb, the coffee table you buy should be at least one-half the length of your sofa, but not longer than the sofa itself. A nice happy medium coffee table length of three-fourths or two-thirds is perfect.

The height of your coffee table should be about even with the height of your sofa seat, give or take a few inches.

Types of Coffee Tables

So what type of coffee table is best for your sofa? Well, it depends on the kind of sofa you have! If you have a standard horizontal sofa, then we recommend going with an oval or rectangular coffee table. If you have a sectional or L-shaped sofa, then we recommend going with a round or square shaped coffee table to fit in nicely. Of course, you can definitely make it work without following these rules if you really have your heart set on a specific coffee table!

Coffee Table Shapes

Here are the main coffee table shapes to choose from:

Oval Coffee Tables

Oval coffee tables are great at balancing form and function. They promote movement and offer ample space for storing things on top. No sharp edges here, so oval tables are great for people with kids!

Rectangular Coffee Tables

Rectangular coffee tables are decidedly more modern and they offer the most amount of surface space to work with.

Round Coffee Tables

A round coffee table can be really inviting to guests and large families who may want to occasionally eat around the coffee table while watching a movie. Add some floor poufs to the other side, and it’s a party!

Square Coffee Tables

Square coffee tables provide a nice and symmetrical look to your living space. They are the most practical coffee table shape and can sometimes offer storage beneath the surface.

Coffee Table Materials

Our favorite coffee tables are often made of marble, brass, wood, or glass. Here are a few recommendations for each material.

Marble Coffee Tables

Marble coffee tables are one of the most highly sought-after coffee tables around. You can’t scroll through Pinterest or Instagram without seeing one! Marble is a heavy and expensive coffee table material. That being said, you can get a pretty great knock-off for as little as $98 (Over 900 people rated it 5 stars).

Brass Coffee Tables

Aged brass coffee tables can give a vintage appeal to your living room.

Wood Coffee Tables

Wood coffee tables are a great choice for farmhouse homes, and anyone who wants a rustic, country feel to their living room.

Glass Coffee Tables

Glass coffee tables are a minimal approach to the coffee table and allow the sofa to draw more attention.

Mirrored Coffee Tables

Mirrored coffee tables add a touch of elegance to any living room.

Alternative Coffee Table Ideas

You don’t have to stick to the traditional coffee table if you don’t want to. Many families choose to use a coffee table made from unconventional materials or objects. Think: a vintage trunk as a coffee table or a flea-market find!

Here are a few alternative coffee table ideas:

Some people choose to forego a coffee table altogether. Others opt for a slightly modified fabric version of the coffee table: the ottoman! Ottomans are great for doubling as a coffee table ADD a footrest. You can easily add a small tray to create a flat surface for when you need it. Many conveniently feature storage underneath, too!

Nesting Coffee Tables

A new interior design trend that I see more and more is the nesting coffee table. Nesting coffee tables are 2-3 separate tables of varying heights and sizes that neatly come together to form a coffee table cluster. A nesting coffee table is great for adding extra dimensions to your living room.

Freeform Coffee Tables

Freeform coffee tables are uniquely shaped tables that don’t really fit into one shape. They may be loosely square or loosely rectangular, to give you an idea of where they can fit. Freeform coffee tables are often made of live edge teak wood, but you can also find some mid-century modern freeform glass coffee tables like this one!

Group of Side Tables

Similar to the nesting coffee table, I’ve seen beautiful living rooms that incorporate 2-3 side tables placed next to each other (often of varying heights) to form a casual coffee table.

Consider How You’ll Decorate

Lastly, be sure to consider how you want to decorate the top of your coffee table before buying one. Do you want to display coffee table books? Do you want to have a family photo album? A coffee table tray? A vase of flowers? A candle? The possibilities are endless, and it’s always fun to plan the design ahead of time! Consider the colors you want to use beforehand to make sure everything fits together just right!

I hope this post inspired you and made your coffee table decision a bit easier!

The modern coffee table is a multi-functional piece of furniture that can add the finishing touch to a living space or sitting room. Once installed and beautifully styled, the right coffee table has the power to make a genuine statement.

How to choose a coffee table

The breadth of options available can make the task of choosing a coffee table seem greater than it is. Use our guide to choosing a coffee table to help slim down the options to those that will compliment your home and lifestyle…

How to choose a coffee table

First off, consider the space and layout of the room. Checking a few important dimensions will help identify the optimum size for a coffee table. Start off by considering these key points:

• Allow 30cm to 45cm between a coffee table and the seating set around it.

• High traffic living rooms will need more space around the coffee table for people to move around. Allow at least 45cm of clear space around a coffee table in this situation.

• If other furniture or a fireplace will sit along one side of a coffee table, allow for a minimum of 80cm for people to walk between with ease.

• Subtracting these measurements from the full available length and width of the open space between your seating will give you the maximum size for your coffee table.

How to choose a coffee table
Second, take into account the proportions of your coffee table. The size and height should always be considered in relation to the seating around it. A few important things to keep in mind are:

• The maximum length (or diameter) of a coffee table should be two thirds of the width of the sofa it sits alongside. For example, if your sofa is 2.1m wide, the length of your coffee table should be no bigger than 1.4m.

• A coffee table has got to be level with or up to 15cm above the seating height of the main piece of seating or sofa. This is particularly important if you often host people in your living space as it makes it easier to reach and lift a drink or plate.

Finally, it’s time to focus on the looks…

Oval or round coffee tables:

The curved edges of an oval or round coffee table can soften the feel of an area that has lots of straight lines and will facilitate circulation in a high traffic living room. And if you’re looking to give the illusion of spaciousness, an oval or round coffee table will appear to take up less space. If you’ve got room, group together two or three matching round coffee tables of differing heights for an attractive layered and flexible display.

Square coffee tables:

If you have the benefit of lots of space between your seating, a large square coffee table makes a real statement. You may also consider using two or four identical square coffee tables and arranging them symmetrically. If your living area has a long sofa against one wall, a square coffee table will add depth to the seating area and break up the long lines of the furniture.

Rectangular coffee tables:

The most popular, shape-wise, is the rectangular coffee table. These look best when placed centrally in front of a sofa, echoing the proportions of the larger piece of furniture. If your living space is long and narrow, this shape will allow the maximum table space for the limited width of the room.

How to choose a coffee table
Choose materials for your coffee table that will compliment your existing furniture and suit your lifestyle. A few popular options are…

Glass coffee tables

These work well in any interior and have a sophisticated look. The glass is easy to look after and the finish of the metal frame can be made to match or standout from the furniture in the rest of the room, as is the case with our new Papillon Coffee Table. A clear glass top will also give the feeling of open space and allow for a view of the rug or flooring underneath.

Marble coffee tables

Marble coffee tables need careful maintenance due to the porous nature of the material. Though, if cared for properly, a piece of marble furniture can outlast all other furniture. A beautiful marble tabletop will allow even the most modern coffee table design to sit comfortably in a traditional interior.

Metal coffee tables

How to choose a coffee table

Made of brass, steel or gold-plated metal like our Balzac Coffee Table, metal coffee tables also need to be cared for in order to keep the surface in good condition. A bronze coffee table will patinate beautifully as it is used, improving with age.

Every sitting area is used and styled differently, which is why we offer a broad selection of coffee table designs in a variety of shapes, sizes, finishes, and materials.

Whatever shape or material you choose to suit your lifestyle, our coffee tables can be sized to fit your space and if you prefer to stretch out your legs and want a side table instead, we can help you with that, too!

How to sell thomas kinkade paintings

William Thomas Kinkade III (January 19, 1958 – April 6, 2012) was an American painter of popular realistic, pastoral, and idyllic subjects. He is notable for the mass marketing of his work as printed reproductions and other licensed products via the Thomas Kinkade Company. He characterized himself as "Thomas Kinkade, Painter of Light", a phrase he protected through trademark but which was originally used to describe the British master J. M. W. Turner (1775–1851). According to Kinkade's company, one in every twenty American homes owns a copy of one of his paintings.

Despite wide commercial success throughout his life, Kinkade is generally held in low esteem by art critics; his pastoral paintings have been described as maudlin and overly sentimental.

William Thomas Kinkade was born on January 19, 1958, in Sacramento County, California. He grew up in the town of Placerville, graduated from El Dorado High School in 1976, and attended the University of California, Berkeley, and the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. He married Nanette Willey in 1982, and the couple had four daughters: Merritt (b. 1988), Chandler (b. 1991), Winsor (b. 1995) and Everett (b. 1997), all named for famous artists. He and his wife had been separated for over a year before his death in 2012.

Some of the people who mentored and taught Kinkade prior to college were Charles Bell and Glenn Wessels. Wessels encouraged Kinkade to go to the University of California at Berkeley. Kinkade's relationship with Wessels is the subject of a semi-autobiographical film released in 2008, Christmas Cottage. After two years of general education at Berkeley, Kinkade transferred to the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena.

In June 1980, Kinkade spent a summer traveling across the United States with his college friend James Gurney. The two of them finished their journey in New York and secured a contract with Guptill Publications to produce a sketching handbook. Two years later they produced The Artist's Guide to Sketching, which was one of Guptill Publications' best-sellers that year.

The success of the book led them both to Ralph Bakshi Studios where they created background art for the 1983 animated feature film Fire and Ice. While working on the film, Kinkade began to explore the depiction of light and of imagined worlds.

After the film, Kinkade earned his living as a painter, selling his originals in galleries throughout California.

Recurring features of Kinkade's paintings are their glowing highlights and pastel colors. Rendered in highly idealistic values of American scene painting, his works often portray bucolic and idyllic settings such as gardens, streams, stone cottages, lighthouses and Main Streets. His hometown of Placerville (where his works are omnipresent) was the inspiration for many of his street and snow scenes. He also depicted various Christian themes including the Christian cross and churches.

Kinkade said he was placing emphasis on the value of simple pleasures and that his intent was to communicate inspirational, life-affirming messages through his paintings. A self-described "devout Christian" (even giving all four of his children the middle name "Christian"), Kinkade believed he gained his inspiration from his religious beliefs and that his work was intended to contain a larger moral dimension. He also said that his goal as an artist was to touch people of all faiths and to bring a sense of peace into their lives through the images he created. Many pictures contain specific chapter-and-verse allusions to Bible passages.

How to unlock awards in topps bunt

Were excited to announce that tomorrow, April 16th, a new update for BUNT 20 will arrive. With this new release, collectors can expect a brand new Awards system! See below for more info on this and other improvements.

New Awards System
With the release of the new Awards system, there will be some changes to how awards are handled in the app. The primary difference will be the merging of Awards and Sets. All information related to a Set and the associated Award(s) can now be found in one location! Simply navigate to the variant in a set to see what rewards you can earn, when the Award will become available for you to claim, your progress toward completing the award, and when the Award will expire. Your Trophies (formerly known as Award “plaques” or “shelf awards”) will also be found within the Sets and Awards area.

Also included in this update, we are updating the system that manages comments in the Trade Feed and in News articles. As a result, comments made on Articles and in the Trade Feed prior to this update will no longer be visible in the app. Collectors can still comment in these areas, but the comment threads will start fresh.

As we begin the update process, we will enter a maintenance period to allow us to seamlessly switch over to the new system. More details on the expected timeframe will be shared here as we get closer to release.

Note: All users will be required to update to the latest version of BUNT once maintenance mode has ended.

You may encounter a period of time where the app update has not populated in your App or Google Play Store, which may prevent you from accessing the app temporarily. Please know that the update may take up to 24 hours to populate in your store. Thank you for your patience.

Please stay tuned for additional in-app announcements about other BUNT 20 information.

This is a great game! It’s super fun and interactive. Great for anyone who loves baseball and trading cards. Opening packs of cards through the game is just as exciting as opening a pack in real life. Wondering who will be inside, hoping it’s someone you want! If it ends up being someone you don’t want or a duplicate there is a great trading network with other members of the game.

The moderators and other players are extremely helpful when you’re just starting out giving tips and tricks to make the game more fun and to get more cards.

If you wanted to you could buy a bunch of coins with real money and get a bunch of packs, but if you’re like me and don’t want to spend real money you can participate in trivia, games, and more to earn coins ( in addition to the free ones you get daily).

If you ever run into problems, the moderators are available via twitter and email and respond almost instantly.

There are 24 cards in this set, but we’ve only released five today. They are:

-Andrelton Simmons

The Awards Subcommittee thanks everyone who made nominations for this year’s Jefferson Burdick Award. Last year we listed the finalists before announcing the winner. A large part of this was to demonstrate the breadth and variety of nominees. Due to the overlap in nominees between this year and last year as well as the fact that we consider anyone who’s been named a finalist to always be a finalist, we’ve chosen to not feature the finalists this year and just cut straight to the big reveal.

So without any further ado, we are pleased to announce that the 2021 winner for the SABR Baseball Committee’s Jefferson Burdick Award for contributions to the baseball card hobby is photographer Doug McWilliams.

Doug’s work as a baseball card photographer speaks for itself. All of us have seen his work. All of us own his work. He even donated 10,000 negatives to the Hall of Fame,* creating a huge digital collection of color images of all kinds of players from the 60s, 70s, and 80s.

If you’ve ever held a baseball card from the 1970s in your hand, you’ve likely admired the impeccable artistry of Doug McWilliams’s work. His brilliant use of color, unsurpassed mastery of light, and natural rapport with his subjects made for thousands of unforgettable and classic cards, each miniature masterpieces of the genre.

—Tom Shieber, Senior Curator
National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum

What makes him award-worthy though is his willingness to pull back the curtain and show us the process of how photographs end up on cards. Doug has been very generous giving interviews to both the Hall of Fame as well as this blog. These interviews are a treasure trove of information about what kinds of photos Topps wanted and the technical requirements that they had.

That cards are essentially cheap, mass-produced photos makes them a visual record of photographic technology. Being able to read about what kind of film, cameras, and lenses he used is invaluable in grounding our understanding of cards as part of that visual record.

Doug’s comments about Topps’s technical requirements on the other hand are a fascinating look at how corporate workflows and standards shape the final products in ways that most of us don’t understand. Much of the Topps “look” that we’re used to is explained by these standards which dictated what kinds of lighting and what kinds of film were to be used.

While there’s a world out there of photographs that he wanted to take but wasn’t allowed to, the photos he did take have formed an indelible part of all of our lives and we’re so much richer for him sharing the process with us. Congratulations and thank you, Doug!
